 Worst Best Picture Winner
I wasn't sure to place this here or in the Oscar forum. If I was wrong it can be moved. I was curious to see what everybody thinks was the worst picture winner. I decided not to put Argo only because it just won (and don't think it is as bad as some of these), but that is what Other is there for. I tried to pick movies from different period that I have read were considered weak winners. I have a feeling what will win, but we shall see.

How Green Was My Valley gets shit on for defeating Citizen Kane.
I love it, Out of Africa, and The English Patient.

Return of the King
Getting it because the two films before it were great doesn't mean this one gets it by default.

 Re: Worst Best Picture Winner
Chicago easily smashed its weak 2002 comp, lots of great films nothing legendary.
Fellowship easily should have won 2001, it was easily the best of the lord of the rings films, A Beautiful mind is a joke in comparison.
Return of the King is mediocre in the extreme and only given the award because the asscar voters robbed The Fellowship in 01.
Crash is Trash and easily the worst winner ever.

 Re: Worst Best Picture Winner
The Hours should have won best picture instead of Chicago.

The Pianist should have easily won in 2002.

 Re: Worst Best Picture Winner
On that list, there are quite a few good films that still should never have won. "How Green" isn't a bad film, but it never should have won. I think "Chicago" and "Shakespeare in Love" are great films, although I agree they should not have been Oscar winners, but that's mostly because there were better films in each of those years.
But then there are films that really suck and never even should have been nominated. I voted for "The Greatest Show on Earth". Couldn't even finish watching it. Close behind are "Around the World" and "Tom Jones" although in 1963 when Tom Jones won, the other films nominated were even worse. It was a terrible year for movies.

Getting it because the two films before it were great doesn't mean this one gets it by default. Well I don't think it is a worst movie than Crash, Chicago, Greatest Show on Earth, or Tom Jones. For me Return of the King is my favorite of the series, mainly because I am sucker for the big battle sequences. 2003 was also a weak year. And I don't think Master and Commander or Mystic River were more deserving to win best picture.

ROTK was trash, well not really, but I can't give it anything better than a B-

 Re: Worst Best Picture Winner
When the 'Other' option has more than 30% of the vote, it's a badly designed poll.

 Re: Worst Best Picture Winner
There's 85 options, kind of hard not for "Other" not to be used a lot. The last 10 years alone has had some very questionable winners.
