 Re: Top 10 of 2011
For the first time since I've been on the site I can actually agree with the "what a shit year" comment that always appears.
1. Super 8 2. Rango 3. Fast Five 4. On Stranger Tides 5. Source Code
6. Sucker Punch 7. Take Me Home Tonight 8. No Strings Attached 9. Kung Fu Panda 2 10. Mechanic, The
Yeah...awful year though I did enjoy movies 6-10 to some degree and for personal reasons/preferences but so far the year's real poor.
Movies I still need to see (1-Aug): Submarine, Another Earth, Life in a Day, Attack the Block, Horrible Bosses, Bad Teacher, Tree of Life

 Re: Top 10 of 2011
I've never understood how movie fan could call any year "shit." Just dismissing a whole year is bizarre to me. There's too much sheer pleasure in the act of going to the theatre and watching a film. And so many movies--even quasi-disposable ones (say, Limitless or Cowboys & Aliens or whatever)--have moderate pleasures.
It reminds me of people who are all, "Humph! I see maybe five movies in the theatre a year, six tops! Everything's shit these days!" And yet these people post on movie forums and blogs. Just don't understand the attitude.

I don't think I fell asleep (I don't really do that at movies) but I found it dull. I'm not a Malick hater...I love Badlands and Days of Heaven. And The Tree of Life now obviously.

Just don't understand the attitude. I also think it has been an above-average year for quality anyway. I feel like there are people who say it's been a "shitty year" every single year (no, not you, Magnus), which kind of makes me wonder if they even like movies. Even 2007, which had a lot of fantastic movies people online loved, I still heard "oy, shitty year!" more than once.

 Re: Top 10 of 2011
This is what I wrote about The Thin Red Line in Aug. 2007, btw: Quote: This is my least favorite Best Picture nominee of the last 20 or so years. I don't hate the movie, I just find it extremely dull and frustrating to watch. It's beautifully filmed and generally well-acted, but pales in comparison to the other WWII saga released in the same year, Saving Private Ryan.

Often they seem to be living in the past. They've chosen to elevate, say, 1967 or 1982 to the point where any modern year must be shit because it doesn't live up to their inflated idea of a year past. (This also applies to a lot of rock fans.)

 Re: Top 10 of 2011
Well in the massive thread, I have something like 15 movies at "B-" now.
B- isn't good in my eyes but it's also I suppose just a sign of a mediocre year considering there are few movies that I've graded below that, then again, it could just be me avoiding bad ones. But, the fact that I have less movies in the top rungs suggest that for the first time for myself it's been a shitty year. Also it's probably more because I was hyped for a fair few films that all disappointed me so that could be the real cause (Bureau, Deathly Hallows, Panda, Transformers, X-Men and even slightly with lower expectations movies OST, Rio, Sucker Punch, Source Code, Unknown)
Worst of 2011 1. Eagle 2. Drive Angry 3. Priest 4. I Am Number Four 5. Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Hopefully the winter saves it; Drive, In Time, Contagion, Ides of March, Puss in Boots, Arthur Christmas, Tintin, Dragon Tattoo, Tinker Tailor, Sherlock, MI4, War Horse)

Kung Fu Panda 2 (9.5/10) 2. X-Men: First Class (9/10) 3. Thor (9/10) 4. The Adjustment Bureau (8/10) 5. Tangled (8/10) 6. The Hangover 2 (8/10) 7. Shaolin (8/10) 8. Instead of declaring the year as shit, maybe you guys should just see better movies.

Just don't understand the attitude. It's just a matter of comparability to other years, same as how one evaluates a good movie from a shitty one. Obviously there are things to enjoy and things to loathe in any year, but calling one particular year shitty is, imo, not remotely comparable to the snob attitude of not watching movies in theaters and dismissing the entire generation of movies. 2008 is a shitty year imo, only one film from that year would have come close to cracking my top 5 of 2007 (wall-e, which I still stand by.) 2010 was also notably weak compared to 2007 or 2004 or even 2009.
