AWESOME POSTER!! That's how it's done.. When this movie beats TDKR and batfans are in denial over how something like this could possibly occur,(mainly too many villains in TDKR echoing SM3) all will be right in the world. This poster in itself shows something we've never seen before, a 1st of it's kind.. The only way TDKR beats The AVENGERS is if Anne Hathaway dies of an overdose like Ledger did..

i think tdkr will overtake avengers faster than the time taken by tdk to overtake iron man. IM2's meh WOM will hit Avengers hard. Outside IM there are no blockbuster heros. both thor and CA are just subset of IM's audience.

TDKR will sweep everything next year

The Dark Knight Rises won't make more than The Dark Knight. Like it or not, but that film had a notoriety and free publicity that no amount of money can buy. Granted, it was well loved, but it's super rare to have a good second sequel, particularly in the comic book genre. And in the case of The Dark Knight Rises, this isn't how they were originally planning on wrapping the trilogy, and I am worried that they'll throw too many ingredients into the pot. Or maybe it will be great... But I still think it has an absolute ceiling of 500 domestic, and "only" 400 million is entirely possible.

Now The Avengers... I think that has a bigger range. It would've helped if Iron Man 2 has been beloved, but I don't think one sequel being mediocre (not terrible, and not terrible legs either) will keep this collaboration from breaking the bank. If Captain America is as much of a crowd pleaser as Thor, and I don't think anyone expects it to be worse than Thor, than I think that they'll be riding on a whole bunch of good will and open to HUGE numbers. And if it can actually deliver on it's promise, it could do really, really well. What I'm worried about is that if they spend way too much time on build up, and the action is just a hair better than what these Marvel Disney movies have been producing, it might not seem like that much of an event after all. It doesn't help in my mind that Marvel fanatics have already been able to fight a bunch of superheroes against each other via videogames for years (by the time The Avengers comes out.) It'll really need to have a novelty and some terrific WOM to beat The Dark Knight Rises... But it's not impossible.

Either way, The Hobbit could still outgross them both WW by the end of the year.

The same ones who saw Iron Man 1 but not Iron Man 2? Who saw Spider-Man but not Iron Man 2? I think that they'll turn out they can really crack the marketing to make it into an event. It could happen but it won't be easy.

I've got no doubt Marvel will market this as the event film to end all event films, which will lead to a giant opening, but this still has a slightly limited audience. If you skipped Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America, you're not gonna suddenly run to the theater to see them all in the same movie.

Iron Man made $318 million. Thor sits at $173 million. I would be willing to bet a massive amount of money that 98% of Thor's audience also fits into Iron Man's 318m. I just feel like there's not a terrible lot of room to grow out of Iron Man 1/2, because the same audience is seeing all of these films.

I think your point about overlapping audience is valid... But I do think that this could extend beyond that too. For one, some people might have just seen one movie in theaters and others on TV, but will see The Avengers if it can be properly sold as an event. And if the WOM is spectactular, I don't think people will avoid it because they didn't bother with Thor. But unless WOM is stellar and leaked at least a week ahead of time, the ceiling probably won't be that high. I do also think that, depending on how 3D holds up this winter, some people would see this in 3D when they wouldn't necessarily.

And beyond drawing hairs, I'd make the somewhat unrelated case that the invisible presence of The Avengers got more people to see Thor than if it was a pure standalone film.

Im really interested to see how well the cross over novelty goes given that Aliens vs Predator isnt that much higher than Aliens or the Predator reboot. For that matter Freddy vs Jason doesnt adjust higher than the highest NOES or Friday the 13th movie. Expendables could be classified as such but too hard to make a comparison since half of those guys are direct to dvd stars.

So lets say 30% above IM 1, is it being too generous?

Well, it's a bit unfair to compare a fairly recent film to a couple that are decades old. Still, the totals are comparable:

Friday the 13th: $39,754,601 -> $109,953,245
A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: $49,369,899 -> $89,370,328

The Dark Knight Returns is guaranteed to beat The Avengers.

Agreed. Had Freddy vs. Jason come out in the late 80s at the peak of Freddie and Voorhees fame, it probably would've done double what a comparable Friday or Nightmare film would've done at the time.

Ultimately Avengers will be big opening weekend ($150 mil+ maybe?), but how big it is from then on really comes down to whether or not it's a big load of shit.
