BKB Here With A Slew Of SIN CITY Reviews=Sky Captain Again
http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/tb_dis ... 683#859501
Now as I've said before, I'm not familiar with Frank Miller's SIN CITY and have tried to locate it at various bookstores with no luck.. I'll probably have to go to a comic shop in itself in order to find it it sounds like, but in the meantime, here are a bunch of SIN CITY Reviews up at AICN that range from major fanboy ejaculating type of love for the movie to a simple "Meh"... Lately, it seems they've been running the hell out of it on TV every other commercial and I've had a chance to see it now on several occasions and the 1st thing that comes to mind when looking at this is Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow all over again and that's not a good thing.. That movie did piss poor at the box office and somehow I've got a feeling this might fall in line the same way.. This looks more like something a fan would appreciate much better than the casual moviegoer not familiar with this sort of thing, all star cast or not..

Sky Captain didnt get the respone Sin City is already getting ( moviegoer wise, critics seemed to like it ), the only negative review of the batch is the last one and Harry said he only got two other negative reviews out of 32. Theres no comparison of the two, except both are CGI fests. Sky Captain is aimed more towards kids, while Sin City is a hard R noir style flick. You should be comparing it to Kill Bill or Pulp Fiction, those types of movies, not Sky Captain.
BTW here's the link you want http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=19683 your link leads me to the message board chat

Perhaps so, but you think the general moviegoer not familiar with SIN CITY won't look upon the black/white and make the comparison of the 2 movies since Sky Captain looked very similiar in style??

Maybe, sure, I never read or was familar with Sin City untill I hyped this movie though and im sure theres alot of others just like me who are still anticipating the movie without knowledge of the novel. It's been getting some good buzz, and its marketing is geting pretty big ( Entertainment Tonight had a Sin City week special, tv spots are showing up, etc )
Anything from 18-25mil opening i'd be happy with, with a finish around 60-65mil would be nice.

Hope its not anything like the dreadful Dick Tracy movie. So far the commercials look interesting, if its anywhere as slow as Dick Tracy, theres going to be hell to pay

Well the movie is very stylish and artsy so I think people will see what the critics have to say. If its some wham bam action movie, I would agree with you

true but most of the time it did look black and white.
So if the film was not black and white, than there is no similarities in the two films. If that's the case than I dont want to read another poster comparing Sin City to the dreck that was Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

For the soul of my 10 Bucks I will spend for that money, it better be better than Sky Captain. (And so far it looks like this).

While there is hardly any similarities, I'll be happy if Sin City is better than Sky Cpatain as I enjoyed Sky Captain a lot.

They will, but SIn City ahs somethign going for it that Sky Captain lacked, well do things...a better release date and actual press.
Sky Captain was really forgetten. I have seen more press on Sin City this week then I saw on Sky Captain at all.
Will SIn City break records and be a mega hit, I doubt but Rodriguez keeps his budgets low, so it will likely make its money back.
Good WOM could carry the film to a decent gross, but I am not expecting a mammoth opening weekend that breaks records or anything. Its an R rated essentiallyt black and white made by a directed with a filmography that really is not that great.

Sky Captain had soo much going against it. The trailer was incredibly unclear of what the plot was, and it aimed squarely at teenagers even though it was rated the "uncool" PG and all the references were the type of thing only much older audiences would get. It had a TERRIBLE release date and a cast that's all either poison or thusfar an unproven commodity. Sin City on the other hand has had marketing going non-stop, and many 1 minute commercials to further strike up curiosity. Robert Rodreguez and Quentin Tarantino are both draws, as is the huge cast. And unlike Sky Captain which looked outdated, Sin City looks to be THE cool movie of the year style wise. While Sky Captain's marketing drew people away from being weird, I think that Sin City's increases curiosity.

I can see where BKB's coming from. I think Sin City is so noir-looking, and seems so desperate to please fanboys, that there's a huge chance it's going to turn off the general audience. I've seen the trailer played in front of numerous films and haven't heard a peep of interest from the audience.

Thats what the novel is, noir, they're not gonna change that just to appeal to more people. From all reviews i've read say basically this is the suppose to be the most accurate comic adaptation ever.

This almost sounds reminiscent of your logic as to why the RING II was gonna make the boatload$$$ and look what happened with that?? I'm fearing now that everything you've mentioned about this appealing and being COOL will backfire on this movie whether it has a large cast or not..

No, I loved it too... it was one of the only wide-release films last year to take a chance at being really unique. And nobody can say Sky Captain was like any other film last year.
But I agree with BKB here, the movies aren't similar, but the arguments about them will be.
I've been reading a lot of Sin City reviews over at Chud. A good discussion where people who were fans got to see it and they are talking about it pretty intelligently. The reviews there are definately more mixed and have more context than the Aint it Cool reviews. It's pretty much what I expected. I expect most of the public to shun it because it seems poorly put together and complicated and I fully expect the folks who love style over substances to totally dig it.
