60m people saw it with all the violence; what's the point of cutting 5 min of it? There'll still be nearly 2 hours more of it anyways.

Violent, yes. Gruesome might describe the scourging scene. It's also a type of violence most of us are not used to seeing in films. And for many people, that scene was the most unwatchable. That's why Mel decided to cut it. I saw it twice in the theatres and was inspired by it both times.

The scourging scene was horrible. The thing with the violence is that, it got to be so much, that by the end you were just waiting for it to be done with. It became numbing after a while. I wonder, if I had absolutely no religious inclinations, whether I would have stuck around for the whole movie. All things considered, I might have walked out on it.

you know .. i always thought it was meant to be like that .. numbing after a while ... and a bit longer than it should have been .. i think that really was the effect that was suppose to be given ... how long this was .. not short enough for people to be like ok but go on even longer than that.

This film is one of the better films in the past 10 years in my humble opinon - it moved me emotionally in a way that nothing had done before it.

I will not see it in theaters purely because im likely to howl like a baby throughout

l don't understand...if a movie is rated R, and they don't want it to be, they can just call it "unrated"? So something like, say, Kill Bill coulda just gone out as "unrated" and anyone could have seen it? Really? :confused: And are they really calling it "The Passion Recut"? Reminds me of the Matrix, and doesn't seem right for this movie at all.

Yes, it is being called The Passion Recut.

And yes, films can be released unrated. The problem is, many theaters will not show unrated films (the same with NC-17 rated films), so their release is much more limited.

Sure, but from what I remember reading, some newspapers and even some chains of theaters refuse to show unrated films. The bypassing of the MPAA rating is usually for the more obscure indie/foreign films whose distributors deem it unnecessary to submit them. And then of course the American Pie/Eurotrip/Old School "UNRATED!" DVDs.

Normally, Unrated films are dealth with the same way NC17 rated films are dealt with at movie theaters. No one under 17, period. So, I don't understand what Gibson is doing here. He's cut the violence, but by not cutting it enough to get a PG13, he's removed the under 17 audience entirely. This is really one of those head scratchers. #-o

Good move. The scourging was over the top, laughably over done.
