Diary of a Mad Black Woman
Who's going to go see it? It opens next week, I didn't even realize because its really dropped down several notches on the buzz scale. I don't know, I saw the preview for it and my expectations went from pleasant to low. I thought it would actually be a bit of a heavy drama, but it looks like its going to just be a melodrama about a woman who was living the high life and had to pull herself back togother after she was turned out. I think that's pretty rich actually, but for some reason the trailer made it seem like "She learns to love again," gets a job, etc, and is fairly formulaic. I thought the poster with the drag grannie and the gun was indicative of a sort of quirky subplot or agenda, but it looks like just an eccentric neighbor that they've started to push as a bigger promo because they can't figure out how to market it, or, if its supposed to be something other than what it is. That's too bad, I would have liked the grannie to be a Maude type-character, only contmeporary urban and black (duh).
How is everyone feeling about this movie? Anyone going to go see it?

I've heard some atrocious WOM about this, Galia. I'd steer clear unless you're really, really bored. Go see Constantine this weekend. I think you'd appreciate the visuals.

Galia would appreciate the visuals in Constantine.

I would pick Diary Of a Mad Black woman over Constantine, which doesn't look too appealing to me, but that's just me. Besides I'm really digging indies lately.

I read that the playwright made something like $75 million from his off broadway productions.
Aren't all black women mad?

I will probably not see Constantin cause I'm a wimp, but I like Rachel, so maybe?
What do you mean the stageplay? LMR have you seen this as a live production? There's a BIG difference in how these sometimes get transferred to screen though. I love the title too, I started a whole thread about how I sometimes watch (and build expectations) about a movie depending on its title. I thought this would actually be either quirckier or more insightful, but the trailer looked terrible. I am so sad, I think maybe if they even filmed it as a play it might have done better. With the dramatic nature, this just feels like a mix between Friday and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. But sans even the serious commentary both of them had. Gah, I am so dissappointed at the RT % right now. 1 out of 7 is atrocious. That's tween pop queen movie numbers right there. Too bad since its a serious production with a serious cast.

Heh. Funny stuff, bABA. I didin't think it was that scary. It was scarier than all of the dreck passed off as "horror" lately, though. That exorcism in the beginning was incredible.

I'll probably never see this. It's definently not something I could appreciate, even with an open mind.

Hence the title....
Uh, I guess coming from you and Bill the play is great, but I wonder how the adaptation to screne went. This is always a hige falter right there. I don't know, I'm pretty psyched they haven't remade half the plays I've seen to big screen, but that cause they were good plays, and each form his its own nuances. if the director doesn't respect those differences, work with them, and has a vision that he really wants to put through in film, he should leave it as a play. I really couldn't tell where this was going. She's mad about everything she did for her husband, which is quite a discussion around domestic support, she loses out in court, yet another discussion around domestic support, homemaking, etc, but then is very bitter (yet another discussion) but then the trailer just took a complete 180 and went with her falling in love with a trucker or something, and just learning to be self-sufficient, which is a bit odd considering domestic role is all about providing the suffieciency within a family, etc. Instead there's just this old woman yapping and it becomes a sappy love-story about her not being so mad at the world, and opening up to love once again. Awwww, all together now...how...sweet.
Oh I hope the reviews get better. I had hopes for this one.

Galia...
The play the film is based off of was a Christian play, so expect everything in the film to end up being solved happily by Jesus or God or whomever the kids are worshiping these days.

I doubt it. And I have some friends that came from very religious backgrounds, it really did help them get by. I'm not opposed to a message of finding strength in it, or I wouldn't have watched Saved! I'm just against regressive backwards thoughtless discussions about it.
Maybe I'll watch Constantine too. I heard it ok, and I'm more likely to see it with people around then alone in my room.
But it'll be much later with a ton of arm twisiting. that's usually the way I break down and build up the guts to do these things.

I was joking about Diary Of A Mad Black Woman.
And yeah, please do see Constantine. As a fellow Blade Runner enthuse, i'm sure you'll enjoy the imagery if nothing else.

This could be a new franchise.
Abacus of an Ill-Tempered Asian Man.
El Camino of an Enraged Hispanic Couple.

Actually, Galia, it looks like my joke about the film isin't too far off....

"...its painfully blunt message that faith can fix anything (all stories are wrapped up in one miracle-inducing gospel-choir church scene) comes across as more of an artificial plot devise than an endorsement of religious devotion."

I'm not saying it's good, but it's definitely a difference. I wanted to see this one too, but at this point, at best I'll catch it after watching a different movie.
