"Star Trek" Pushed Back to 2009
http://www.variety.com/VR1117980912.htmlQuote: Paramount is pushing back the release of "Star Trek" from Dec. 25 to May 8, 2009.
Par also is moving DreamWorks' Ben Stiller summer comedy "Tropic Thunder" from July 11 to Aug. 15.
Moves were part of a major reshuffling to the studio's release calendar, as well as DreamWorks' release calendar.
Studio insiders said "Star Trek" has the potential to gross more in May than in December.
All the majors are likely to revisit their 2008 and 2009 release skeds in the wake of the writer's strike now being over. There's an abundance of films slated for release this year, and particularly comedies. It's likely that Par won't be the only studio pushing back films to 2009.
"Star Trek" has no competition in its new slot--at least not so far. One week earlier, 20th Century Fox bows "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."
Paramount also announced that Martin Scorsese's Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer "Shutter Island" will be released Oct. 2, 2009. I personally like this new release date better, since it will now be one of Paramount's tentpole summer films. It will surely gross more with this date. Also, this will allow J.J. Abrams to make script changes and film new scenes.

Ah, shit! Longer to wait. Also dunno if Star Trek lends itself well for a summer tentpole, it doesn't strike me as one. Then again, i can't really say since i'm not familiar with Abrams' reimagined Trek, so who knows...

On the contrary. Now it has a film like Wolverine on its back, and has no holiday to help its legs. I was thinking 125m-150m in December 2008. I'm thinking 100m-125m in May 2009. And both are those predictions are optimistic. Eh, I think it still has a decent shot of doing well, even if it is facing the second weekend of "Wolverine."

Re: "Star Trek" Pushed Back to 2009
On the plus side this makes the 2009 schedule look much better. On the negative side, they're taking a big risk here. This film just seemed perfect for Christmas. The last Star Trek filmed that opened during the summer was the Shatner directed one back in '89. It opened to $17 million and finished with $52 million. I'm not sure what translates to now.
I still think this will do okay and make over $100 million, but it wouldn't surprise me if Abrams has another summer disappointment on his hands.

Re: "Star Trek" Pushed Back to 2009
I'm thinking 18m/70m for Star Trek w/ a Dec. reLease and 35m/85m for a summer.
Tropic Thunder now is gonna have a Lower opening but better Legs bec. of too many reLeases on that weekend and PineappLe Express on its back. They shouLd move it to August 22.

well, considering wolverine is guarenteed to drop 605 in its 2nd weekend, no worries.

^ I think that is why star trek moved in the first place. Universal and marvel convinced paramount to move it.

Action and scifi do better in summer releases. Fantasy, drama and romance do better in winter.

He did not say "Sci-fi and action only work in the summer, no matter what the extenuating circumstances might be, like star-power, competition, or advertising."

Don't put I Am Legend in a category. It's Will Smith. He can make any movie a hit, at any time.
