Jobs/Individuals That Get a Bad Rap At The Movies
What are some occupations you can think of that are falsley/inaccurately portrayed?
Just to start:
-lawyers: I honestly can't remember the last film I saw where the lawyer was good. Remember Jurassic Park and the T Rex? \:D/
-priests: I heard there's actually a positive portrayal of one in M$B. Shocking. Judging by the movies, I thought they all were rapists and pervs.
-nuns: are't they all freaks???
-college students. Seriously, how many films are about hard-working students? Finding Forrester and...?

Scarlet Johanneson played a hard working student in In Good Company.
College just isn't interesting without parties tho.

Ya, I was about to mention Erin, but Andaroo, that was 2000.
Honestly, if you think 'movies' and 'lawyers', what's the image? Positive or negative? In general, I know it's common in culture to portray them negatively, and that's very much the case at the movies.
Btw, I'd say Liar Liar was a twist on that, no?
Also, Scarlett? A Good Student? I gottsa watch me IGC!!! ^.^

I'm going to have to disagree withyou on this because you're not making a distinction between priest that are in movies and priests that are the main charcaters. Well, when its the main charcater it tends to need a little extra controversey to move it along because, well, no one just wants to watch two hours of someone leading a nice normal spiritual life. But as far as secondary characters the priests are always viewed quite warmly in european and south american movies for example. If you've ever seen Open City a priest is one of three main characters that oppose the fascists in italy and defends everyone and gets strapped to a chair and riddled with bullets at the end. box_2005 wrote: box_2005 wrote:

What about A Few Good Men, The Firm, Pelican Brief, My Cousin Vinny, Client, Civil Action, even movies like Body Heat actually have sympathetic lawyer figures. I agree with you though that when they are secondary they tend to be trying to rip off the main character, etc. But whenever they're the main character, they're always more complex. Its the vice-versa of the priests now that I think about it.

I think this thread could go on forever.
TO be honest - every single character in a movie can fall into a cliche or sterotype - and the connotations attached to the sterotype are negative anyway. But they provide the shortcut to full character building.

Every John Grisham film tends to focus on a lawyer with a heart of gold and ethics to match! The Client (Susan Sarandon), The Firm (Tom Cruise), Runaway Jury (Dustin Hoffman), The Chamber (Chris O' Donnell), The Rainmaker (Matt Damon), etc... the list goes on!

I should probably try to read the whole thread before I make a point that somebody else has already made far better and much earlier.

Fiances! Nobody gets screwed over in movies like the fiance of the lead actress in movies, who usually gets dumped so she can run off with the air head hero. I see this several times a year in movies, its an epidemic of fiance bashing.
The only people who have it near as bad are those fruit and vegetable vendors who get their stand run over by every car chase.

Cliches and stereotypes are easy ways for writers to establish characters without having to do any real work. An Italian in New York? Must be a mobster. Japanese visitor to America? Tourist who takes too many pictures. Angry cops, corrupt big businessmen, dug-using urban minorities, stupid southern hicks -- there are too many of all of them.

On lawyers, Al Pacino in And Justice for All and Paul Newman in The Verdict ( but was he really good and should he have won the case and maybe the best one, Georgory Peck in to kill a mockingbird.
On Priests and Nuns - have to go back alittle futher but the Priest in the Exorcist and the nuns in The sound of music

Oh got another one
Hookers - Girls gotta make a buck.
They are either wholesome women forced into the job who actually are very intelligent and have slaps of inner beauty, or shameless junkie slappers. Wheres the middleground!?
