 The "Black Cauldron" fan club.
Along with the Emperor's New Groove, this is my most underated Disney Cartoon. I love the animation, the music, and the story. Plus, being so different from all the other Disney Cartoons, it deserves appereication. Who's with me.
Fan club:
Scott Vasquez.

I love fantasy, and I even run a live action fantasy game -- but Black Cauldron just doesn't do it for me (sigh). It had such potential... some scenes are (obviously) rushed and they look it, and the pacing is off. I wanted so much to like this film. Count me out, unfortunatelty.

Got an odd question, but since this thread made me think of it, here is where I will be asking it.
I think there is a new movie coming out? Howells Castle or something? I believe its anime, and have heard good things?
Anyone know more?

You must be referring to Howl's Moving Castle, from Studio Ghibli, the makers of Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies.

Ya, Howl's Moving Castle, which is on its way to becoming the biggest film of all time in Japan
It's by Miyazaki, so that means it's automatically great

You can add me to the club Scott. I happened to like this movie a lot, and the villian has to be one of the most scariest in all of Disney history. I remember he gave me nightmares as a child, but that wouldn't prevent me from watching it almost everyday. I watched this film so much that our old VHS had terrible tracking, and we had to buy a new copy. Anyway, I loved this movie, and I liked the dark tone it had, especially when the villian was on screen.

The Black Cauldron is the only Disney animated film I can't sit through. Hell, I even like Oliver and Co. But I think The Black Cauldron stinks like yesterday's crusty underpants. Just an awful, dull film...

I have to admit... this is one of the Disney films I really hated when I was younger, I may have to see it again though to make a final decision.

I agree, but it's not the worst. I think that would have to be Robin Hood.

w00t. someone who agrees
Robin Hood wasn't even worth sitting through. Just rent the 1930s classic instead (and, because of the Technicolor process, the colors happen to be more vivid and interesting than most of today's flicks).
I didn't like Peter Pan or Pinocchio either. The Lion King, Alice in Wonderland, and Cinderella were always my favorites.
I don't think I ever saw The Black Cauldron.

How could you Mike?! Need I remind you of the wicked choons the great Robin Hood unleashed on our planet? Cos I'll do it! See here:
"Robin Hood and Little John walkin' through the forest,
laughing back and forth at what the other has to say...
Reminiscing this and that and having such a good time,
Oo-de-lally, Oo-de-lally, golly-what-a-day!"
Oo-de-lally, Mike!! OO-DE-LALLY!!! :x

Yeah, I just love the way all those English animals in Robin Hood sing and talk with that southern American accent...

They're talking animals, Mike! You're supposed to let the various leaps of logic (american accents, extravagant clothing, dexterity with swords and bows) fly!

Geez, if the movie had been good I can overlook stuff like that. I dealt with Dick Van Dyke's horrible cockney accent in Mary Poppins, after all.

I'll have you know Dick Van Dyke's cockney accent was perfect. It's the cockneys that get it wrong!
Nah, I agree with you for the most part about Robin Hood. It's not one of my favourite Disneys. In fact, it's pretty far down the list with the other Disney stinkers like The Aristocats and Pocahontas. But as bad as it is, it doesn't compare to the big pile of smelly pants that is The Black Cauldron.

I would offer an opinion on The Black Cauldron -- if I had been able to suffer through more than 20 seconds of it.
Even those 20 seconds were a total affront to the books.

Sorry Ahmed, didn't mean to rape your childhood.
But I read the books first and those 20 seconds almost raped my childhood.
To be fair, the 20 seconds that I saw was when Taran and Elionwy met Fflewdder Fflam and Flewdder was bumbling around the forest juggling stuff and making awful noises, so maybe that's got nothing to do with the rest of the movie. What's it like? Does it keep roughly to the book plot? Were whatshisname (Taliesin's son) and Gwydion as noble as they were in the books or did they bumble about like Fflewdder? Do they *shudder* sing?

I loved the books by Lloyd Alexander (That was his name, wasn't it?), rather grew up on them. But from what I saw, the movie just completely raped the series, mixing multiple books into one, making way too many stupid comic reliefs... bleh, I'd take the books over the film any day, and I don't even tend to like fantasy books.
