I thought Marie Antoinette was supposed to be bad...

Cannes booed it because Marie is an embarassment to the French or something, not because of it's quality.

Re: I thought Marie Antoinette was supposed to be bad...
I'm sure the French were just pissed it wasn't exactly a faithful retelling of one of their leaders. If someone did a similar post-modern take on a well-known U.S. president, Americans would get pretty pissed.
Or you can go with the simpler, funner theory that the French are snobbish pricks, which I'm sure most of them are anyway.
Not that I'm trying to idss the film or anything. It looks, at the very least, fascinating. However, I'm certain it'll become the It favorite film of teen/college girls, and I'll quickly grow irritated with it, ala Napoleon Dynamite or Family Guy.

It looks like one of those movies like Restoration that you can only enjoy if you throw any expectation of historical realism out the window.

It does have a pretty bad score on IMDb http://imdb.com/title/tt0422720/
That might have to do with the huge amount of 1's it recieved.

Nobody should ever consider IMDB ratings as a credible source.

I thought the trailer was great. It made it stand out from other by-the-numbers historical films.
I'm intrigued by it. If nothing else it looks...different.

I actually agree with you. Though I'm not Sophia's biggest fan, this looks like it could be better than her last two.

I really, really liked the trailers, but was saddened by the early bad press. It just goes to show that you can't judge a film off of early word.

Great film, really enjoyed it. The art-direction and costumes deserve both an Oscar nomination.
