What has happened to today's ACTION Star. Arnold save us????
What has happened to today's ACTION Star. Arnold save us????
Remember the good old says when you had action stars / heros like Arnold, Stallone, Siegel, even Bruce Willis was OK.
Now look at what we have - Still waiting for the Rock to come through with a biggie. I just want someone who can bash the hell out of you and has the size to back it up.
- Uma - Kill Bill
- Keanu - Matrix / Speed
- Kate Beckinsale - Underworld, Van Helsing
- Matt DaaaaaaaaaMon ( from Team America ) - Bourne
- Ben Affleck - the Jack Ryan movie plus others
Am I missing someone on either side of the equation?
I guess we will have to be happy with and settle for Wesley S in the upcoming Blade.

It does seem like action stars are harder to come by. Well, not action movie stars, because there are enough. But one that does all these action movies, that are awesome and aren't just for the special effects. Vin Diesel is a guy I cannot tolerate. The Rock could definitely be an action star, but his problem is that he's funny too, and action comedies just aren't the same as your Steven Seagals or your Arnolds. A funny line here and there is great, especially to set up when they're going to lay the smackdown on someone, but The Rock is just more of a funny guy than an action guy.

Yes i miss them. Although i am liking the new star, which is sorta the "cool, sophisticated thief" or the "slick talking wise-guy agent" .......but Action Stars are the best.

Vin was supposed to be the "Great White Hope". Or is he Mexican. Or bi-racial. Or Italian. Whatever the hell he is, he was supposed to take the torch that was passed to him.
He dropped it instead.

Vin is clumsy, although the Rock could fill the void. He has it..

Arnold tried to pass the torch to the Rock, but that's not up to Arnold, that's up to the audience. Guys like the Rock and Vin Diesel are being pushed on an audience who really isn't very impressed. Action movies are in a sad state, much like comedies are. Guys like Will Ferrel, who couldn't carry a spit bucket for the real funny guys, are a great representative of the state of the genre, and The Rock and Vin Diesel are equally so with the action genre. Actually, Pierce Brosnan was the king of the action stars, but now he's out of the running as well.

Society has moved on from the 'blood and guts' routine, sadly....but it's moved onto make way for differentiations of the "action star" and nowadays that is....Tom Cruise.
Looks at his recent films. Exactly the same sorta pattern Arnie and Sly used in the eighties to early nineties.

No I don't miss it but I do wonder why it changed, why there are so much fewer action movies now.

Rock has the potential and frankly, his little performance in Rundown had me rooting for him all the way.
what was good about arnold, sly and all that their action movies actually required action from them. a lot of today's dont ... its mainly cgi and shit ... no more hand to hand combat, running around the jungle. The Rock was freaking cool in rundown and i wanna see more of him. Vin i couldn't care less about.

I don't really miss the old ones. I hate Siegel especially. I like to see chicks kicking ass so it's cool that we've got more of that now. And I think Jason Statham rocks (he was awesome in The Transporter) and is better than Arnold, Stallone, etc... Arnold was cool in the Terminator flicks, but not anymore.

The martial arts genre has taken a big blow, at least that type of martial arts has.....so no he wont/cant be the new action star.
Unleashed looks amazing, but one film will not warrant him being the new "sly" or "arnie".

i think the term you're looking for is "dungeons and dragons player"
(i mean, who knows what race he is? dwarf? orc? amazonian warlock?)

i miss the mindless violence of the 80's/early 90's action flicks....ahh the memories. it got no better than stallone/schwarzenegger/van damme at the top of their games.

i would sincerely like to see a new action hero, but i think he would have to have some sort of twist. the arnie/ stallone character has become a bit of a spoof stereotype (e.g., mcbain from the simpsons). the rock has been comic at times, but i don't see how he could have done otherwise. as it stands, the action hero role is one that you can't be po-faced about - simply because it's become a bit of a joke.
if i could think of a way to revitalise the stereotypical action hero, i'd write a wicked film based around it. as it is, i think someone better than i will have to save the genre
