Re: WORLD OF KJ'S 100 GREATEST MOVIES: COMPLETE!
Well lets be clear then...it would not be the top 100 performances of all time, it would be the top 50 male performances and top 50 female performances...but like, mixed together.
Like, yknow? If ninety-nine and 100 on the list were both female, for example, and but the 51st best male performance was generally considered better than 100, thats not really a real list.
I'd say either split em up and have two lists, or simply let it play out...take the 500 or so performances, let people nominate theirs, and do it just like we did this list...if only thirty females make the list...well, men are just better actors. :o :o :o :O :O (Ps, that last part was like, not really serious.)
The good news is, a performance list could very well be much better/more interesting than the film list would...certainly wouldn't be full of Speeds and top ten LotR actors and whatever else.

First, many thanks to Box for organizing this top 100 thread and list. Watching the list unfold was very exciting, although maddening at times.
However, this list was made taking a limited amount of movies that were selected previously. I would be interested in also doing a list, but with no restrictions. Any movie can be voted for.
I'm sure many people had movies that would have been in their top 100, that they couldn't even vote for.
For such a list I would say the rating system should be 1 point per movie, and in case of a tie, the best average of placements will determine who's in front.
So, is anyone interested in that list, or is it too similar and too soon? Also, since this was kind of skipped over, I wanna say I think it might be interesting...but there WAS a nomination period, and I think if you leave it completely open, there would be like, tons of films with few votes and lots more potential for garbage. I dunno... I'd be more interested in seeing makeshift's hand-selected posters version...there is a great definitive* top 100 out there...it's just a matter of finding it. * obviously not really definitive...and if done the way we were discussing it last night, many probably wouldn't even like it...but it could be good for recommendations (in a "here's what you gotta see" way), and i'm really interested in what would come out of it.

Splitting the Best Performances into two lists- one for females, one for men - isn't too crazy. I mean, my favorite actors all happen to be women anyway, lol. Women are far too overshadowed on this forum, which is (let's face it) teeming with teenage boys. hehe. Doing the makeshift style list would be interesting too. I mean, only a FEW people on the forum have seen enough films to be qualified as pretentious cinephiles, so how bad could it be?

Well, I think by posed he just meant people who list paintings in their top 100.

Re: WORLD OF KJ'S 100 GREATEST MOVIES: COMPLETE!
I don't think it's necessary to split the list up by sex. The problem is that actresses don't get as many dynamic and so-called "juicy" roles as actors do, so forcing the list to be 50/50 could end up reducing the overall quality. Also because good roles for women are fewer, they are actually more memorable, so we may have only 30 women at the end, but I personally expect Betty Davis, Gloria Swanson, Jodie Foster, Meryl Streep, Kathy Bates, Hilary Swank, Charlie Theron, Kate Winslet, or even the most recent Helen Mirren to be ranked quite high for their performances. And I certainly wouldn't mind some Hepburns and Bergman.

I guess I am alone in thinking that women have given many far more interesting, juicy roles. I'm sexist like that.

I don't think splitting up the lists is necessary...just encourage everyone/constantly remind them that women exist (even in action movies).

The countdown would be a mixed list, but we'd still have an alternate list of the seperate sexes if we did that anyways.
The thing I'm afraid of is that supporting performances will be completley ignored.

Not a fan of 50/50 either. The great roles in Hollywood are like 80%+ male anyway, so there will be a lot of weaker female performances making it in. We might as well use affirmative action for race as well and force a demographic breakdown based on either US or world population.

I have loved far more performances by women than those by men, for sure. One thing: Should we elminate Ian McKellen from being considered for LOTR?
