Are We There Yet? and Beauty Shop would've been unmitigated disasters even if they had both starred white people.

Beauty Shop would have been worse if it had an all white cast.

I just came back from Heights.
It was one of those rare times when I really don't know anything about the film but I read some good clips from reviews at rottentomatoes. I knew it was one of those character pieces and that it starred Glen Close.

I came out utterly impressed. I can't believe I saw 2 incredibly amazing pictures in one day. The mystery involving the photographer/artist Benjamin was interesting to follow but the final or not final, most pivotal scene towards the end was great. It's so refreshing to see a film that ignores or makes invisible society's and often Hollywood's barriers for sexuality and just paints a great portrait of people. And this movie wasn't perfect, but I really enjoyed it; it was very captivating how everything fit in the end.

How would you compare it to Closer? (Connections have been made between the two by a few reviewers.)

Same with Are We There Yet? Y'know, I think I found the movie tolerable only because it at least made the joke about a black guy in Oregon, that had the whole theater laughing.

You know there really isn't almost any type of story relation to CLOSER. They may have something with the fact that some, actually very few, and maybe only 1, of these characters does things on purpose to inflict hate. But the more I think about it he does not at all.
I'm sorry, I see no connection yet between the two other than they are both character pieces about people in relationships. The ones in here are complicated and not so tightly bound as the ones in CLOSER.

I just rented We Don't Live Here Anymore 2 days ago. Now that movie is almost the exact same plot as CLOSER, except set in suburbia. I actually did not enjoy WDLHA. It was a bit too slow, just too many random and unmeaningful scenes. Maybe not so much non meaningful as they-reall-could-have-done-better. None of the characters were really likeable, which is a direct connection with CLOSER, but in CLOSER you seem to invest some part of yourself, in that short time the movie runs, in the characters. In WDLHA you don't really care about the characters because they are so dumb whereas the ones in CLOSER are conniving.

As far as quality and grading goes. I gave both CLOSER and heights an A- in different years, and I really think they are about equal in my book. Closer could get high marks for really having a strong affect on you and for such a focused and good script. Then again, I love how Heights spirals through its plots, resulting in what we have left. [Minor Spoilers Ahead]Some people might complain that Heights has that happy ending in which everyone got what they wanted. But I'm not in that group. The way I see it is this: Yes, in the very end they all seem to be somehwat happy with how things turned out, but the movie was about the journey there and the hurtful process they all went through. These are still some messed up people and I think the ending signifies the start of trying to get their lives quickly back into motion instead of sittign around, moping, and letting thir failures consume them.[/end spoiler]

I really loved Geln Close's character and I wish they had done a little more with her, or what I mean is, showed more of her character and where she goes at the end, but her purpose in the movie is really the mother as the focus of the film is on the engaged couple.

I think Glen Close is one of the hardest and best working actresses in the industry today. She is doing her best work both on TV and in movies lately and for some reason she isn't getting as much attention for it as she used to. I think she is one of today's most underrated actresses. Yes, she's known but she turned her career from a potentially fading one to a more engaging one as she got older. Bravo!

Mav... I am fine with Batman as a grade B, seeing as how that really isn't that bad a grade. I could maybe understand and tolerate that A+ for Star Wars knowing you're a fan. Not to mention I am actually fond of your grade for Crash. But one thing I just can NOT, can NOT understand is your review or grading of Monster-in-Law, easily one of the biggest trash films of the year thus far.

Now, I'm not posting to start an argument and I don't even really want any justification. It just bothered the hell out of me so much since you saw the film that I just had to post it. So there you go, my rant is finished.

Well, Raffi, I think Monster-in-Law is better than Return of the King. That doesn't bother you, does it? 8-[

I can only remember my top 3, the only one's worth mentioning to be honest:

1. Mr & Mrs Smith - A+
2. Sin City - A
3. Hitch - A-

#1 and #3 made me feel brilliant, so funny and enjoyable. #2 was pure hardcore voilence film in a comic book style, for once, unlike poor attempts (punisher 1989, hulk and daredevil).
