55. 12 ANGRY MEN (Sidney Lumet, 1957)"Well, I'm not used to supposin'. I'm just a workin' man. My boss does all the supposin' - but I'll try one. Supposin' you talk us all out of this and, uh, the kid really did knife his father?"One of the best-acted films ever made. The fact that it manages to stay gripping throughout its entire running time despite the fact that it's just twelve guys talking is incredible. A perfect example of how to write a screenplay and how to act.

54. JACOB'S LADDER (Adrian Lyne, 1990)"If you're frightened of dying, and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. If you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the Earth."A truly disturbing and terrifying film. The scene in the hospital is one of the scariest sequences in cinema history. The story has enough twists and clues leading up to the fitting ending to keep it interesting, and the visuals here are simply ground-breaking. A horror flick that's both scary and powerful.

53. AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (John Landis, 1981)"Have you tried talking to a corpse? It's boring."A terrific blend of comedy and horror. The werewolf transformation scene and others like it are perfectly balanced out by the dry British comedy. The makeup effects are fantastic and the script is fresh and sharp. Amazing that this was made by the guy behind Animal House.

52. THE SIXTH SENSE (M. Night Shyamalan, 1999)"Do you know why you're afraid when you're alone? I do. I do."An expertly crafted horror drama. Even without the twist ending, it would still be a very powerful and pretty scary flick. And with that twist, it's even more impressive. Willis is solid and Osment is a breakthrough - it's a shame his career really went nowhere. Shyamalan may be considered overrated, but this film shows he has genuine talent.

51. THE TRUMAN SHOW (Peter Weir, 1998)"Somebody help me, I'm being spontaneous!"Jim Carrey's second-best film and easily his best performance. How he wasn't even nominated for the Oscar after winning the Globe is shameful. He completely and utterly moves the picture. A terrifically original story and a sharp sense of humour add to make one of the most unique and unusual sci-fi films in the last decade.

This is a great list so far. There hasn't been one pick that I've really disagreed with. The only one I was kind of "meh" at was X2. It's a good film, but I find it kind of overrated.

I recently saw this film for the first time since the only time in 8th grade, and was absolutly blown away. this would be in my top 10. it is so engrossing, well witten, and well acted. perfect film making. may even be top 5.

Jacob's Ladder is the first real misstep in trixster's list. Also not really a fan of the Truman show.

50. CONTACT (Robert Zemeckis, 1997)"First rule in government spending: why build one when you can have two at twice the price?"One of the few great sci-fi films that attempts to reconcile the debate between faith and science. The book is one of my all-time favourites, and this film is a superb adaptation of it. I love science fiction works that take place in modern settings, and this is one of the best. A stellar cast and some great direction are just icing on the cake.

49. COLLATERAL (Michael Mann, 2004)"Guy gets on the subway and dies. Think anybody'll notice?"A great action movie that never sacrifices plot or characters for the sake of the visuals. While the action scenes (especially the nightclub sequence) are truly outstanding, it's the character development that makes this film so fantastic. The climax of the film just goes to show that. While some may find it silly or unrealistic, it makes perfect sense if you understand the characters and understand what happens at the end. Cruise's best film.

I just need to find a spot for Harry Potter 5. Not sure how popular my list will be though, lots of comedies and not many old movies. No one here can guess my #1.

48. PLANET OF THE APES (Franklin J. Schaffner, 1968)"Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!"Simply a sci-fi classic. Sure it's dated. Sure the makeup and sets are very 60s. Sure the ending has been spoofed a thousand times. But it's still the best twist ending in film history. Heston's arrogant performance fits the film perfectly, and the sharp jabs at religion and faith are welcome. Burton's version may be prettier, but that's all it is.

47. KISS KISS, BANG BANG (Shane Black, 2005)"Well, for starters, she's been fucked more times than she's had a hot meal." "Yeah, I heard about that. It was neck-and-neck and then she skipped lunch."One of the funniest films I've ever seen. But the way that the comedy and mystery is blended together is what makes it even better. Everything about film-noir, from the voiceover narrator to the many plot twists, is spoofed lovingly, and the jokes are fast and furious. As hilarious as it is clever.

46. ED WOOD (Tim Burton, 1994)"They don't want the classic horror films anymore. Today it's all giant bugs. Giant spiders, giant grasshoppers... Who will believe such nonsense?"Another hilarious film. Johnny Depp is terrific and Landau certainly deserved his Oscar. Burton's most reserved and most mature film.

45. THE UNTOUCHABLES (Brian de Palma, 1987)"Isn't that just like a wop? Brings a knife to a gun fight."My favourite gangster film. It's entertaining and exciting, but also stylish and meaningful. Contains no less than three incredibly classic scenes. And the music is terrific. Another much-deserved Oscar win in this one.

44. PSYCHO (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960)"We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven't you?"Hitch's best. Still terrifying after all these years. The bit with the detective going up the stairs is just as scary as the shower scene. Another film with a classic twist that doesn't feel at all gimmicky.
