79. King's Row (Sam Wood - 1942)

Image

One of those 40s dramas like they don't do anymore. The story of a group of friends in a small town from child to adulthood. And Ronald Reagan in his best role ever. He really should have been nominated for best supporting actor for this one.

78. Face/Off (John Woo - 1997)

Image

Although I do really like the early HK movies of Woo, I feel this one is his best. Travolta and Cage seem to have fun in their acting, and even if the premise is somewhat outlandish, it's pulled off perfectly.

77. Nosferatu (F.W.Murnau - 1922)

Image

German expressionistic filmmaking at its best. Full of unforgettable scenes. There has never been a vampire more repugnant than the one portrayed by Max Schreck.

76. Diabolique (Henri-Georges Clouzot - 1955)

Image

Obviously the original, and not the remake with Sharon Stone and Isabelle Adjani. Clouzot was a master of suspense and shock endings, and this movie delvers with both.

Ooh, I loved Nosferatu. It's lost its bite (HAHAHAHA :(), but the images are absolutely spellbinding. And of course Schreck is amazing.

75. Dirty Harry (Don Siegel - 1971)

Image

I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

ENOUGH SAID!

74. Dressed to Kill (Brian DePalma - 1980)

Image

Many people complain that De Palma copies from Hitchcock, but I think he would have been proud to have such an admirer. And who can forget Michael Caine in this one?

73. Peeping Tom ( Michael Powell - 1960)

Image

Solo direction by Powell this time (without long time collaborater Pressburger) but a mesmerizing film about a homicidal psycho who films the moment of death of his victims with the same camera he uses to murder them.

72. The Hanging Tree (Delmer Daves - 1959)

Image

Great western with Cooper and Malden in top form about a doctor that has some secrets behind him. And a very beautiful ballad too.

Your only misstep so far (for me, at least). A lot I haven't seen, but I found this one not very good at all.

71. Das Boot (Wolfgang Petersen - 1981)

Image

Another of my favorite genres, submarine movies (see Bedford Incident), and this one without a doubt is the most claustrophobic and realistic of them all.

70. American History X (Tony Kaye - 1998)

Image

Even if partially disowned by the director due do differences with the movie studio, a very powerful look into racism and a very powerful story of redemption. Contains one of the very few scenes in movies that always make me feel uneasy(curb scene).

69. Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder - 1951)

Image

Somewhat forgotten or overlooked movie that shows how the media uses a tragedy to create a sensation in order to sell more newspapers. Still actual. If you get the chance, see this one. I think you won't be disappointed.

68. Frailty (Bill Paxton - 2001)

Image

One of the biggest surprises I ever had going into a movie without knowing much about it. And who would have thought that Paxton would really deliver as a director.

67. Dead Again (Kenneth Branagh - 1991)

Image

Although better known for his Shakespearean adaptations, it's this story about reiincarnation set in the present time that I consider Brannagh's best film. Fine supporting jobs by Andy Garcia, Derek Jacobi and Robin Williams.

65. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (John Ford - 1962)

Image

Like Unforgiven, a western that deals with the demistification of western heroes. Ford, Wayne and Stewart, three masters at work.

64. Re-Animator (Stuart Gordon - 1985)

Image

The funniest and goriest movie ever. This movie is like a circus ride of dark humor.

63. The Andromeda Strain (Robert Wise - 1971)

Image

Chilling tale of a satellite that returns from space and brings something with it. What makes it so frightening is that it's based on scientific facts and could actually happen.

62. Patton (Franklin J. Shaffner - 1970)

Now I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.

61. Giant (George Stevens - 1956)

Epic drama that tells us the story of a family full of greed, passion, revenge, hatred, etc. Why don't they do them like this anymore?

60. Fury (Fritz Lang - 1936)

Image

After he is almost lynched for something he didn't commit, a man plots and takes revenge against the people that almost killed him. Call it the original Death Wish if you want.

American History X is good. Frailty is incredibly underrated. The Omen is alright, but I never found it that scary.
