You should make a new topic for February.

This January 8 to February 8 business sucks. Just bite the bullet and make it the first to the first.

The first already passed.

Very funny, but at the same time a shallow film. Not up to some of Stiller's other films. The humor often comes at the expense of any sort of coherant plot which in the end makes the film only slightly above average.

If your talking about which you should watch, both aren't very good but I'd pick The Grudge. Vanity Fair was surprisingly very mediocre, as was The Grudge but at least it was somewhat entertaining...

I'm speechless. I don't think there's ever been a movie that had such a huge impact on me. It's one of the best movies I've ever seen. The acting by Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, everyone; fantastic. The story and the message is incredibly strong, and though it's taught to us in the most brutal way, it's a masterpiece. Some scenes were literally brutal for me to watch. I can't say anymore about this movie, except that it's one of the best, with the most powerful message of all.

Mamet at his finest. I'm not a huge fan of white slavery. But if I was, I couldn't think of a better piece of cattle than Veronica Mars herself, Kristen Bell.

Marty does a good job with the concert film. Not all the music is great but it's stil enjoyable.

2/4 Gallipoli (1981) C+

Not my favorite Weir film. Gibson's early acting work isn't very impressive. I've seen better WWI films.

Great movie. l was a little disappointed with a few parts, and l thought a lot of the dialogue was not very good at all. l felt pretty much completely detatched in every sense of the word for the first 35 minutes or so, but then it really picked up and become entirely enthralling. (as does the dialogue...much better and believable here) Some of the best filmmaking of the year - extremely well made; above average cinematagraphy, as well - beautiful. Includes 3 (4, 5?) wonderful performances from the kids/teens, and a great, great ending. Can't complain.

----------------------------------------

there may be spoilers in the following post, so l dunno...don;t read it, maybe if yhavent seen it...

meh.

dunno what to think. 50 minutes into it, l started thinking, "yknow what? you don't have a clue what is happening. and because of that, this movie is really sucking." and l was right. so, l went back and rewatched those 50 minutes, and still got very little out of it. l'm not gonna argue that it's a confusing movie, cuz l don;t really think it is. l just couldn't really get it. rereading the initial post in here, it makes a LOT more sense, now. but there's so many inconsistancies l can't say it's "excellent."

the movie is extremely stylish, which l loved. it's well made, well written, and generally very well acted. the music is excellent, too. so that is good.

but there are so many little things. first of all, it must take place over a period of 10 years, right? it shows Yan's beginings, and he said he'd done it for ten years, so, l'm gonna say yes. but then, after he starts with Sam (who he works for for 3 yrs) it shows him meeting up with the psychiatrist lady...he says it had been 7 yrs since they'd seen each other. um what? (maybe that wasn;t her though?) l think that the stuff with Lau's (?) wife was way underused too...they introduced it, and just kinda forgot about it. also, l couldn;t follow the main story hardly at all. my take on it is as follows:

There are two main groups. Sam's, and the Cops. There are two main people underneath these groups. Lau, (the kinda young faced kid), and Yan (looks older, with the mustache thing). [as an aside, for almost an hour l had them confused...somewhere they say something that made me switch em around...maybe when first introduced, Yan looked younger, and thinner?] Sam has about 7-10 gang members who he puts in with the cops. They are his "eyes and ears" within the police station. The cops take Yan, and put him in with Sam. He reports back to them, via SP Wong, and Morse Code. Lau, is working for the cops, but also, and firstly Sam. (and yet he seems much more loyal to the cops). So, Lau is put in Internal Affairs, to catch Sam's mole (aka himself), and Sam wants Yan to find out who is the mole within his group, from the cops. (this is Yan, btw....)

So far that's about right, correct? l guess it makes sense, to me, now, but watching it it really, really didn;t. Especially when you factor in all the other characters that appear to be playing for both (or multiple) sides...

someone talk to me bout it, tell me why l'm wrong, make it make sense for me. l could definitely see me loving it if it made sense upon first viewing. of course first viewing is gone, now, so l doubt l'll ever completely love it. but l'm sure it could garner up ***½ outta four, sometime later. right now l doubt it'd be more than **½...

Not as bad as I had expected, it was actually somewhat scary, although that was mainly due to the excessive use of jump-scare tactics. The ending was quite strange and could have been improved. Some areas of the film were too fast paced to allow comprehension of exactly what was occuring. Still it was fairly good, if mostly a by-the-numbers horror film.

Like a crazier version of Natural Born Killers. I loved it. Sheen and Spacek were both great. That dance scene ranks up there with the strangest in the history of cinema.

2/4 Artworks (2003) F

This film proves that Virgina Madsen only needs good material to be a good actress. This film also uses wine and a vineyard in it's storyline.

hmmmmm.

2/4 Secretary (2002) D

I'm usuallly all about asses and masturbation and nudity and violence.

2/4 Cleopatra Jones (1973) B+

I know, I know. But Shelley Winters as a lesbian warlord/pimp is brill. And huggy bear is in it as Doodlebug. And Cleopatra Jones kicks ass.

I watch a lot of documentaries. This is one of the best I've ever seen.

A man goes missing for several years and this movie traces the effect of the disappearance on his friends and family. I can honestly say, this tale has more twists and turns than any film I've ever seen.

Out of Sight was a fun movie the first half, and then completely uninteresting the second half. George Clooney and J Lo both did a good job, but the movie has a whole wasn't too entertaining. I enjoyed some parts, but those were cancelled out by the rest of the movie.

We're on Day 30! Woo hoo! I'm watching like 4 movies today.

I Know What You Did Last Summer receiving two grades higher than Out of Sight makes Libs want to cry.

Well, not really.

What'd you give Out of Sight, Libs? I didn't find it all that great.

Out of Sight was a fantastic movie, I thought. The screenplay, story and actors all sizzled. Besides being a smart movie, it was fun to watch. It also featured white-hot chemistry between George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez. Actually, Out of Sight is probably the last movie which features Jennifer Lopez, the actress, and not J. Lo, the prepackaged media deal.

Out of Sight, along with The Limey, are two of the best Soderbergh films ever made. I liked Erin Brockovich, Traffic, and Ocean's 12. But those other two are in a class by themselves.

And yes, I realize he made films prior to his rebirth as a filmmaker. I didn't really like them though. Too arty for my taste.

 That's true. Well, I mean it is a smart movie, but I seriously think that at the half way point, it lost all it's flavor. The ending was fairly decent, though, when Jennifer Lopez shot George Clooney in the leg to basically force him to go to jail because she couldn't kill him or let him get away. And, the car ride where he met the Muslim guy. That was pretty good. Maybe I need to watch it again sometime. For now, though, I'd still give it a C.

Speaking of Jennifer Lopez, the actress:

If you've never seen Selena, try to do so. Lopez is absolutely wonderful in that movie.

Yep, I've seen that. We watched that in our Spanish class in 8th grade. I agree, she was fantastic in that.

The Dreamers was absolutely excellent, for the most part. One of the all round "best" movies of last year. However, in general it just didn't sit right with me. Maybe it was the story, although l have no specific problems with that. l dunno. l also thought it was a bit (unnecessarily) extreme sexually. Some of the nudity/sex seemed to be there just for the sake of being there, or even for "shocks." l'd have been fine with it, if it in some way furthered the plot, or message, or anything really. But it didn't seem to. And a lot of the references went over my head, as l haven't seen most of the referenced films. l can't in good conscience give it more than ***/****.

Hotel Rwanda, on the other hand, is remarkable. Admittedly, l knew very little of the Rwandan genocide going in to the film. One of those things that was just never taught to me, or whatnot. So needless to say, l found what happened there (as portrayed by this film) tremendously horrible, which led to a very moving and emotional experience (and film). The first 40 minutes or so seemed very forced and unnatural (but still quite good), which was really my only problem with it. Once the UN (or whoever) showed up and took all the European's, the film took off and never looked back. Don Cheadle is amazing here. Quite possibly the best lead male performance of the year, (l've yet to see Ray). It's unfortunate that he'll miss out on the Oscar. Sophie Okonedo, too, was great. Then again, all of the acting is worth noting. It kinda reminded me of Salvador, Oliver Stone's masterpiece of similar subject matter, which is a good thing. Just an all around great film.

The Grudge is a great horror movie. It doesn't quite beat The Ring because The Ring had the better story, but The Grudge delivers more attempts at scares, and I liked that. Though it's not really that scariest movie, it is a jumpy type of movie; very creepy. I enjoyed it a lot, even with the second viewing, and it's one of my favorite horror movies.
