Re: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Franchise Discus
There are plenty moments of emotion, DH1 is pretty much all emotion. I do admit that I didn't get too emotional with Beasts, but I also haven't spent ten years with these characters.

I was pretty sad when they had to erase Kowalski's memory.

The title is Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Gellert Grindelwald. Very clunky, hope they change it. http://ew.com/tv/2017/11/16/fantastic-b ... tle-story/

Awful title. And those cast photos are bad luck.
Still looking forward to it though.

Re: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Franchise Discus
I liked Fantastic Beasts but Newt seemed to have a very low key role in the film. I did like the characters and world building though. I'm ready for the sequel.

I'm not feeling that title at all. It almost feels like JK doesn't have anything to do with the movie.

Re: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Franchise Discus
It reminds me of There and Back Again becoming The Battle of the Five Armies. I don't think WB needs to be that desperate. So far as I know the fanbase really likes Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

Re: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Franchise Discus
I’d definitely say Fantastic Beasts was considered weaker than the Potter films, but well enough that every fan will check out the sequel, especially with more Harry Potter tie in this time.

What is going to happen? Crimes of Grindelwald will still make money, but is it wise to invest in this franchise until 2024?

The mistake they made is letting Rowling write the screenplay. She is an amazing writer, but a screenplay and novel are two different things. Stephen King and other writers have failed at it as well.

Re: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Franchise Discus
JK writing the screenplay is part of the novelty though isn’t it? Kinda keeps it from being seen as a cash grab by the base. I’d say go ahead and let her direct the next three too. Yates has been fine, but we know what we are getting with him and its boring at this point.
Cut the budget down to $150M and advance the plot by ten years. Fantastic Beasts: The Muggle War in which Grindelwald incites a major conflict between wizards and humans. We have never seen that and it’ll make a killer trailer.

I would change directors too, but not Rowling. They need some new blood in the franchise.

Re: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Franchise Discus
Surely the right path is to get Rowling to right the story, a screenwriter to write the screenplay, then not Yates to direct. Or...let Rowling do it all and hopefully this POS franchise dies.

Re: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Franchise Discus
I do not believe Yates is a problem or at least not a primary one. He is a capable journeyman director whose crisp set pieces and blue-and-grey color palettes have served the franchise well. One can sense his inspiration for the Potter franchise is running low, though, which is hardly a surprise six films in. Chances are he should be replaced, but he needn't leave with his head hung in shame.
I am biased as a person who absolutely despises The Crimes of Grindelwald, yet I also feel my general affection for J. K. Rowling's world pulling at my heartstrings. I am not sure what the answer is to this franchise at the moment. The idea of three more movies, with audiences expected to wait until 2024 to see Dumbledore and Grindelwald duel (while Rowling presumably continues to pretend Newt Scamander is the center of the plot), is...laborious.

Re: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Franchise Discus
If Rowling can't put her ego aside and wants to script it, then this franchise dies on the next film.
Terrible script. Yates has done what he always has, so it's not at his door. Heyman, maybe since he produced the whole thing and sanctioned the writing.

Re: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Franchise Discus
Well, I liked the intent behind the film and it may partially be my fault, but I've had trouble finding a connection with the characters and recognising some of them in both this movie and the first... It feels as if the directors wanted to stuff thousands of cool animals and events and fights everywhere, only to leave the characters with a slight lack of development. As a result, it's difficult to care for the characters and their struggles... Of course, it doesn't spoil the film either, but it doesn't have the "magic" of the Harry Potter movies, and is condemned to live in the shadow of the original series and to be compared to it, even unconsciously.

Re: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Franchise Discus
I think what will happen is that WB will panick and force JK Rowling to include a bunch of connections and references to Harry Potter with random characters like Dobby or whatever appearing and widely featured in the trailers. But just like audiences smelled the cash grab with Solo, they will here too and this will continue the downward trend. At which point they might cancel the series and JK might end up turning into a book series.

The continuity of this franchise has always confused me. Especially now with these films. I guess they're using Men In Black logic.

Nah. Men in Black is using the Fantastic Beasts logic.
