it should really be noted thaat Tom Cruise definately isnt the world, or even Hollywoods biggest star.
Box office wise hes a perinial draw whos main rivals are Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Will Smith. But those major stars have become so powerful that their press coverage is relatively low. They aren't seen in public alot and as a result, they are not as famous as some of their powerful rivals like Nicole Kidman, shes possibly one of the most famous people in Hollywood right now. Is she the biggest box office draw? No. But she definately has a shot at biggest star.
Female stars pretty much beat male stars in terms of coverage, PR and how much exposure they can get a movie. Magazines opt for women celebs; male celebs are considered less intruiging and therfore guy candy.
I have to DISAGREE with this. Magazine coverage doesn't equal star power. If that the case then girl like Jessica Simpson and the Olsen twins are the biggest stars today. No Way. They might be talk about a lot at the water cooler, but they have not much power. As for more respectable magazines, they usually features celebs that have films/project coming and big star like Cruise, Hanks, and Robert only have about one film per year and do not do product endorsement. So only about a couple months a year at most would they give press coverage. Other time they're very private with their private life and busy making their movie and don't go out to events much, so there isn't much for press coverage for them, unless there are some big scandals.
For me I measure star power, not just in B.O. or magazine but in their POWER in the business. And Tom Cruise definitely has one of the most, if not the most power of any celeb.
