Re: I hope you all go and see The Ruins this weekend
The trailer didn't manage to set it apart from other generic teen slashers but the reviews that are trickling in seem to paint a different picture. Will definitely check this out, once it comes out here, which is like in a few months.

The best horror movie in a long while is produced by none other than Ben Stiller, heh

Re: I hope you all go and see The Ruins this weekend
I ended up choosing to see the Ruins based partly on this thread but also because I wasn't much into leatherheads, wanted to see a new film and a new theatre had opened so...

The turning point for me was when it sunk in that the screenplay was written by Scott Smith, who also wrote A Simple Plan - - one of my favorite movies of the year it was released. Mind you, that was directed by the great Sam Raimi before he lost his touch and went all blockbuster...

Re: I hope you all go and see The Ruins this weekend
Well, I'm back - - and here's my review: {SPOILERS AHEAD...}Bradley Witherberry wrote: Well, it ain't no Simple Plan...
My hopes had been raised by the screenplay by Scott Smith, and the egging on of Lectro el Doctoré, but they were unfortunately not met.
That being said, it was certainly well above the average horror flick that I end up seeing. I place this amongst the "it could happen to you" genre that includes such recent classics as Open Water and Hostel - - movies that even though far-fetched in their premise, are stories that one can imagine happening to them in TRW. Unfortunately, unlike A Simple Plan where a viewer can well imagine the baser choices of the characters - - here we are left with guessing at what them damn vines are thinking...
The cast of "unknowns" certainly helped the believability (though I sincerely doubt that Jena Malone can remain unknown for much longer - - she's going far!), by the end, I'd had it.
3 out of 5.

Re: I hope you all go and see The Ruins this weekend
it was very mediocre, especially after all the hype it had here. the characters made the most retarded decisions ever.
but it does have some sick scenes.

THE RUINS - 8/10 (A-)
Loved it! The best horror movie to come out in quite some time. It's better than The Descent, Turistas, and especially Cabin Fever. The characters are flawed and yet I still cared about them. I loved the location.
It's such a shame that this disappoints at the Box Office and crap horror movies are all successful.

Re: I hope you all go and see The Ruins this weekend
Lecter, you might be a little disappointed because from what I hear from someone who read and loved the book they do change quite a bit, including putting the focus on a different character. The ending is also different. I read the changes and I do wish they'd have stuck with the book better, but I still loved the movie.

If anyone's going to change things, he's the one who should do it.
