Which is an unequivocal disappointment. That won't evn break the studio even before video.

I think Universal will just be happy to walk away from this train wreck without having gone bankrupt...

Ignorant people... Even without taking into consideration the substantial amount of ancillary revenues (ton of merchandising, some of which success stories, for example just the other day i read that the Kong game was the top selling video game in the UK - dunno how good it's doing elsewhere but surely not bad, not to forget the big promotional partner deals with the likes of VW, Coke, Lottery etc.) the movie would have been almost in the black by the end of its theatrical run...
Kong is clearly a success for Universal, theatrically perhaps not quite as potent as expected but nevertheless a success...

Agreed..ignore Baumer & Bradley's (aw what a nice couple they make) mindless taunts Kong has still posted great figures in the general scheme of things, but then some are selective in their expectations..

Oh for heaven sakes.. Come on already with the subject of why KONG was or wasn't a disappointment cause in the end, IT WAS DOMESTICALLY.. At this point, it will barely scrape passed 220 Million or so and when the movie cost practically that much, this without a doubt has to be seen as a letdown, especially for a movie touted as being the one to take TITANIC down and you know that was said so don't try to spin this.. It's over.. The End..

This is 100%, absolutely, no questions asked a loonies diluted and dilapidated wetdream. This is not a success. The film cost about 210 mill to make. How much it cost to market, I'm not sure, let's say 50 mill. How much to distribute overseas? Not sure, say 25 mill. That is close to 300 mill in upfront costs before a cent comes back to them. Now if you go by the theory that studios get about 55% of the gross when all is said and done. the film would have to make about550 mill WW just to break even. So good luck loonies. You'll always have the LOTR series to jerk off to.

Yeah, because it was said so by one or two overenthused individuals it was "touted to take down Titanic"...
Anyone with a brain knows Titanic won't be challenged anytime soon and when the time comes it'll most likely be a sequel to a hugely popular movie somewhere down the road when tickets will cost in excess of 10 dolars on average or a totally unexpected hit...

Hello!? That's exactly what i've said... But again, admission tickets are not the only revenue streams, there's money they get from companies wanting to promote their products with images from the movie and there's merchandising, both of which Kong had plenty...
By your reasoning there would be only a relatively small number of movies making any profit at all before hitting DVD, including your beloved horror flicks because with print and advertising even the cheapest cost around $50m and most of them barely manage to cross $100m (worldwide, theatrically). By your reasoning Batman Begins made quite a loss for WB...

Yeah, but these so called "Overenthused Individuals" just happen to be reputable critics spouting this BS and now, you don't even hear so much as a peep out of them as to what went wrong and how such a sure thing that was supposed to bring in a large portion of the Female Audience ended up staying at home to watch episodes of "Days of our Lives" instead..

Well its a success, but clearly not an uberblockbuster. I hope Superman doesnt have the same effect, but I think it will do a little better.
