Cyborg (1989) is one of the best post-apocalyptic dumping ground movies out there (in space).

Five films on Algren's list match mine.
It is a fun list, though, and it certainly matches his taste and personality. He is a connoisseur of macho, stylish, slightly homoerotic pop cinema.

I want every film I name to be a startling, argue-around-the-water-cooler surprise.

24. Airplane! (1980)Certainly the best of it's kind, for a long time it was what I considered the funniest film of all time. And the jokes are still in top form 33 years later. Especially compared to the crap we're subjected to today spoof wise. 23. The Road Warrior (1981)The Road Warrior is a down right pleasure to watch. How many action films wouldn't exist if not for the Mad Max films? Thunderdome and the original are both very effective films on their own, but not without their flaws. The Road Warrior is the best of both films mixing awesome action/ wonderful post apocalyptic settings, and a very good performance by Mel Gibson. If not for the stupid kid subplot of Thunderdome, the Mad Max trilogy would be one of the best ever made. 22. Jaws (1975)Jaws effectively started the blockbuster we all love, and scared a generation out of going into the ocean, causing the majority of our parents to be much tanner in general. No other film can attest to that. But Jaws holds up even today. It's exciting, has a lot of heart, and is frightening as it again plays on our fears of the unknown. William's score mixed with the excellent editing and cinematography make Jaws the undeniable father of great popcorn movies. 21. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is super cool. Shane Black shows he should have been directing a long time ago. Val Kilmer and Robert Downey Jr offer the best comedic pairing since Wilder and Pryor. It's a wonderful crime mystery filled with dark humor and a lot of satire, and excellent performances from all. It has an older style of filmmaking that is not only fresh, but extremely well done.

The Road Warrior is an awesome choice. Though I slightly prefer the first film.

I'm actually surprised by a lot of movies on your list Algren, would have been a fun read for you go through them. I would have just waited until you came back. The pacing is what keeps it going usually. I believe the last one went strong for almost 2 years. If I had an extra 25 a lot of your films would have made it on. Total Recall, Predator, Demolition Man, etc. All wonderful.
I'm surprised no Timecop/ a couple of Seagal films didn't make the cut.

Well, I hate Seagal (his best movie is Marked for Death or Under Siege 2 around a B+), and Timecop is one of Van Damme's worst for me. I really don't have the time to make write-ups for all of my choices. Anyway, it's done now. Page 11 is MINE!

Every. Single. One. Were they perhaps even chosen with that criterion in mind?

Honestly, my choices won't be very surprising to anyone who pays attention to or is in any way, shape, or form conscious of my general tastes: a bit of horror, a bit of crime, a lot of tears, a lot of period costuming.

If I read you say 'in any way, shape, or form' one more time, I shall kill a nearby cat.

Haha. He does say it quite often. He also uses 'melancholy' and 'melancholic' a lot in his reviews, as well as loads of other expressions. But I enjoy reading his words. I'll just murder a nearby cat for kicks instead.

20. Snatch (2000)Basically it's Snatch or Lock Stock depending on which you saw first. I saw Snatch first, and the movie's style and cool characters still stay with me like a 1st viewing. Every character shines in a delightfully hilarious crime ensemble film. Guy Richie's style and script is magic. 19. Charade (1963)Such a wonderful film, a great romance, fantastic thriller, and one of the best mystery films I've ever seen. Grant and Hepburn have never been better and they are just a joy to watch. Both ooze so much charm out of their roles, and it's just as fun as it is thrilling. 18. Ghostbusters (1984)"They hate this, I love to torture them. That's right boys, it's Dr. Venkman!" This is probably the most quotable film of all time for me. I love this film. It's one of those comedies when everything works. The cast is perfect, the effects still hold up well, and the story, action, and humor are all in top form. The Ghostbusters song is still one of the best ever too. 17. Sin City (2005)This film just left me in awe the first time I saw it. It's exactly what you hope every comic book adaptation would be, like V for Vendetta, you are completely immersed into the world of Sin City with unbelievable visuals. It's crazy violent, extremely entertaining, and has a cast for the books. I hope the sequel isn't too bad. 16. Young Frankenstein (1974)Flava nailed this on the head. What works so well, apart from the hilarious script, and a cast filled with comedic greats, is that Brooks and Wilder love the Universal Monster movies. They relish in recreating the atmosphere, using the same sets, and mimicking the style that made those films so much fun to begin with. Gene Wilder (Willy Wonka just missed out on the list) is the true master of comedy.
