Best Art Direction

With this category, we honor the design, construction, and decoration of sets. Whether a film is reviving the past, imagining the future, or depicting the world as it exists today, a film is given detail and dimension through art direction and related disciplines.



Antebellum architecture lies at the heart of 12 Years a Slave. Set and shot in the American South, the film blends real structures, including plantations still standing, with ones newly constructed with historical authenticity in mind. (The grand main houses tend to be preserved with more care than the modest buildings into which slaves were crowded.) The Orleans, the coastal steamer on which the protagonist is sent southward after his unlawful imprisonment, was constructed as a set on dry land and placed in the water through computer-generated imagery.



American Hustle is shot through with the aesthetic and spirit of the late 1970s at their most absurd and indulgent. Acrylics! Chromes! Burled woods! Psychedelic wallpaper! The art direction is a glorious celebration of an era's playful and vulgar taste, and it is the rare film in which even the main characters' hairstyles may count as elaborate props.



Gravity is intended to be a more realistic cinematic depiction of space exploration. When the characters are not just floating through vast frames populated only with stars, the design team's challenge is to construct detailed environments, including parts of the International Space Station, with which they can interact. The film may almost never pause to explain the significance of the various gauges and panels and screens on display, but their presence alone intensifies the verisimilitude.



An adaptation of perhaps the most famous novel of the Roaring Twenties demands art direction nothing short of majestic and momentous, and this lush, post-Technicolor 3-D vision of The Great Gatsby explodes with splendor, from shots soaring above and through period Manhattan to the sequences of outsize revelry in the title character's ostentatious mansion.



The art direction in Her is a triumph of subtle world building. Set in the near future, the film as a visual experience imagines how society as it exists today, including the ever expanding reliance of humanity upon its technology, will evolve moving forward. A significant component of the storyline is the protagonist's smartphone. Resembling an art-deco cigarette case rather than an iPhone, it is a subtle and elegant piece of retro-modern craftsmanship emblematic of a fictional future in which advanced technology has become an integral, yet almost invisible part of daily urban life.
