The most underrated gangster-epic. Everyone talks about Godfather and GoodFellas, but Miller's Crossing is equally impressive in its visuals (Barry Sonnenfeld's best job as a cinematographer), the music, the acting and the script. A masterpiece.
73. Groundhog Day
Bill Murray's best comedic performance. The concept of the movie is not TOO original, but executed to perfection.
72. Arsenic and Old Lace
What a fun movie. Cary Grant acts so over-the-top that he himself called this his worst performance, but he is wrong: It fits the material perfectly. One of several masterpieces by Frank Capra and this one even works although (or because) he doesn't use his trademark saccharine.
71. The Cooler
A wonderful fairy-tale: smart, charming and intelligent. William H. Macy is a winner as the loser and Alec Baldwin returns to the top. Maria Bello is reliable as always and does her part in delivering the most mature sex scenes ever to put on screen.
70. The Matrix
If you can ignore what came after the original and look atonly this movie, you can't deny its appeal. The action is still marvellous and groundbreaking, the script is intelligent and the look cool. Maybe the most influential movies of the last decade.

69. Erin Brockovich
It is Julia Roberts' Oscar-performance, but the star here is Albert Finney as her boss. He finds the perfect way to integrate a bit of comic relief into the story which is much needed. The story, based on the real-life Erin, is awesome and still shocking.
68. Chariots of Fire
It has become chic to hate this movie because it allegedly stole the Oscar from more deserving pictures. Only those who haven't seen this movie can say that. It is a beautifully told look at the Olympics, brilliantly acted, faithfully recreated and with one of the most memorable scores (by Vangelis)
67. Bring It On
THE guilty pleasure. Shallow minded people will call this fluffy cheerleader stuff and suspect everyone who loves it does so because of the mini-skirts. Yes, Dunst and Dushku look really hot in here, but this mocie works so well because it has lots and lots of comedy, great cheerleading sequences and quirky characters. If I was only allowed to watch three movies over and over again for the rest of my life, this would be one of them. It never gets tiring.
66. Dead Man Walking
Sean Penn didn't deserve his oscar for Mystic River (yeah, come on, hate me), but he was robbed for not winning one here. The star of the movie is behind the camera though. Tim Robbins does the impossible in portraying a guy waiting for the execution of the death penalty without taking a pro or contra side.
65. The Hudsucker Proxy
This time it is Tim Robbins in front of the camera. The movie went down into history books as the one where the Coens tried to go commercial and failed miserably. Look again: They failed miserably, because they didn't go commercial with this (for them) bid-budget-extravaganza. It still has the edge of all the early Coen's works, a great ensemble cast and lots and lots of original ideas.
64. NARC
The thinking man's Training Day. The Washington-flick may have taken all the credits, but this little movie is the far better gritty cop film
63. Sunset Boulevard
One of the most spectacular opening-sequences in movie history. The rest is slightly weaker, but wth the emphasis on slightly. A fantastic look at the shark pit Hollywood
62. In the Line of Fire
Wolfgang Petersen's best Hollywood work has Clint Eastwood shining in the role of an ageing secret service agent who doesn't wanna lose another president. His adversary is spectacularly portrayed by John Malkovich in a role that in every other year should have guaranteed him the Oscar. Thrillers don't get much better than this
61. The Maltese Falcon
Awesome Dashiel-Hammett adaption by John Huston. Bogey delivers another Oscar-worthy performance (and was once agan snubbed) as private eye Sam Spade. Arguably the best flm-noir ever

Clint's best political assassination thriller to date :razz: hehe and the Maltese Falson is the best of the film noir genre. Love it.

60. Alien
The Original by Ridley Scott is still the best of the franchise. Creepy yet beautiful, this is the total opposite of Star Wars in terms of atmosphere. In termsof quality, Alien can easily hold its own
59. The Rookie
I'm a sucker for sports movies and this one is a real winner. Based on real-life, this is not about winning the big game but winning against yourself which is quite refreshing. The always under-rated Dennis Quaid delivers a heck of a performance.
58. The Right Stuff
Dennis Quaid shines again in this awesome retelling of the space-race. He is helped by a fantastic ansemble cast from Fred Ward to Sam Shepard (as Chuck Yeager). Director Philip Kaufman pits the astronauts (who stand in the spotlight without having done anything) against the testpilots (who risk their lives everyday), which is a fantastic angle to tell the story. The only worthwile Tom-Wolfe-adaptation
57. On the Waterfront
No matter what you think about Elia Kazan, he sure could make movies. This is his masterpiece with an incredible leading performance by Marlon Brando who stands up to the corrupt union bosses.
56. In America
Based on his own-life experiences this is a gripping family tale by Jim Sheridan (who deserved to be on this list with In the Name of the Father which I completely forgot when I made this list). Amazingly acted, this one moved me to tears. And it features some of the most amazing child actor performances this side of Haley Joel Osment
55. Bittere Unschuld
No one of you will know this one, but this is a fantastic german tv movie which one lots and lots of awards - and well deservedly. It tells the story about one guy who is about to getting fired when he sees his boss raping a waitress during a party. Instead of telling it to the police, he uses his knowledge as leverage in his job. But the waitress - together with the guy's daughter - take justice in their own hands (but not in the eye for an eye way, this is far more clever). Outstanding!
54. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
To me still the best of the chic martial-arts-movies. It has better fights and a far more interesting than the overhyped Hero.
53. All the President's Men
Fantastic retelling of the Watergate-scandal with two superb leading actors (Hoffman and Redford). It is an inspring tale about one of the most famous pieces of investigative journalism.
52. Strictly Ballroom
Wonderful over the top dance movie: It's the thinking man's Dirty Dancing. Directed by Baz Luhrman this one is an experiment in visuals and music like Moulin Rouge many years later.
51. Dances with Wolves
Marvellous directing debut for Kevin Costner. Doomed before release because it took the bravery to let the indians speak in their own language, it proved all critics wrong - comercially and critically. A rousing epic though the later released extended edition is a bit too much
50. Blood Simple
Another directing debut, this time by the Coen Brothers. The edgy, bloody thriller is still a highlight of its genre. Cleverly scripted and full of wonderful performances by Frances McDormand and Dan Hedaya among others.

49. Fearless
You should have realized by now that I have a knack for Peter Weir movies. There's just something about his directing and his choice of projects that I can immediately connect to. Jeff Bridges delivers another rearkable, underrated performance about a guy struggling with the fact that he is one of the few who survived a plane crash. This is one of the best catastrophy dramas since it doesn't deal with the crash but with the far more terrible aftermath.
48. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Jim Carrey delivers another top-notch dramatic performance in this quirky romance. But the real treasure here is the script, which is one of the most original you'll ever see.
47. Gattaca
The directing debut of "Truman Show"-scribe Andrew Niccol is a brilliant sci-fi-piece, not focusing on big sets but on the humans that live in this world. It deals with the taboo subject of genetic enhancement of humans and does a marvellous work with it.
46. Bound
You Matrix-lovers can say what you want. This is by far the best movie by the Wachowskis: Sexy, thrilling, brilliantly acted, cleverly scripted. The best erotic thriller ever (closely followwed by Body Heat, another movie I now realize I completely forgot when compiling this list)
45. Casablanca
THE classic love story. It may be a bit overrated from a modern point of view, but this movie has it all: Great performances, unforgettable scenes. Maybe it won't be an immediate love-story if you see it for the first time, but it sure will be the beginning of a wonderful friendship.
44. The Aviator
A thrilling biopic of the storm and stress period by famous billionaire Howar Hughes. One of the best ensembles you'll ever see brings not only the life of Hughes, but the Golden Age of Hollywood to life. Cate Blanchett does a remarkable job as Kate Hepburn, editing, camera, music, visual effects, sound, etc. are pitch-perfect and the crash in Beverly Hills is one of the best action scenes ever.
43. Fly Away Home
There are a lot of Kid's movies out there, but only the chosen few appeal to an adult audience as well. This is one of those few, starring Jeff Daniels (who has a surprisingly lot of entries in my Top 100) and the young Anna Paquin as the surrogate mother for a flock of geese. The scene where she flies through the skycrapers is unforgettable. Go see it and take your whole family with you
42. Pulp Fiction
Still Tarantino's best. It played with the chronology before it became hip, it features Bruce Willis in one of the best performances and it revived the career of John Travolta (if only for a few years). The term cool was invented for this one.
41. Mr. Smith goes to Washington
There's a reason Capraesque has become an addition to the dictionary, and this movie is one. James Stewart shines as an everyman who goes to Washington with ambition, not realizing that he is only meant to be a chessman in a dirty political game. But he finds a way to overcome them all in one of the most memorable monologues in film history.
40. Once Upon a Time in the West
Sergio Leone's farewell to the western is a brilliant one. Helped by Ennio Morricone's score and Henry Fonda's remarkable turn as a bad guy, this is one of two westerns to feed the genre to newbies.

38. Some Like It Hot
Deemed the best comedy of all-time by the AFI and rightfully so. The highlight of Billy Wilders Oeuvre, Curtis and Lemmon are hilarious and Marilyn is sexy as hell
37. Field of Dreams
"If you build it, he will come". Seven magic words which are the essence of this adult fairy tale. It's a baseball movie on the outside, but on the inside it is so much more. If you're a girl and wanna see your guy cry like a baby, go take him to this one :wink:
36. The Lord of the Rings
It's a marvellous trilogy ot to be more precise an epic 9 hour movie. How Peter Jackson pulled of the adaptation like no one else could have. Yet, this is not the perfect movie everyone assumes it is. Part II and III have elements that really drag. So this is not the best movie of all time, but certainly one of the best.
35. Das Boot
Not only the best movie ever to come out of germany, but one of the best war movies (and certainly the best U-Boat-movie) at all. You can literally really grasp the tension inside this boat. It is a nail-biter par excellence.
34. The African Queen
At last the movie that brought Bogey his well deserved Oscar. John Huston's movie is an adventure classic, full of beautiful locations, romance and action. Bogey and Hepburn have chemistry like few other movie couples.
33. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Sergio Leones masterpiece. This is the best epic western ever made (we'll come to the best western overall later). Clint Eastwood shines in this one, as Leone hits the final nail in the coffin of his Dollar trilogy. The showdown at the cemetery is just stunning.
32. Memento
To reduce this one to the backward-gimmick doesn't do justice to this movie. It is a fascinating story about a man who lost his memory and the hunt for the killer of his wife is the only thing that keeps his will to life alive. Great acting across the board does help too
31. Titanic
With great success comes great hatred and so it is with Titanic. Most Oscars, biggest grossing movie ever, yet afterwards you were only cool if you openly declared to hate it. This is hypocritical. It still is a spellbinding lovestory with tremendous action scenes. Yeah it is a bit kitschy at times, but so what? You can't get a better catastrophy movie than this one.
30. Spirited Away
Maybe the most original animated movie ever. Miyazaki is a pure genious, he is so full of brilliant ideas and knows how to create memorable images that even Walt Disney would watch in awe.

29. The Deer Hunter
Best Vietnam War movie ever. The jump from urban life into vietnam was often copied yet is never as shocking as here. You never get a better look at what war can do to one's mind and soul than in this one. To watch DeNiro and Walken at top of their game is a treat
28. Beauty and the Beast (Walt Disney)
Still the only movie ever to be nominated for Best Picture, this is still the best Disney ever put out. I never thought one could care for animated characters as much as in this movie. It is gorgeously painted, has - literally - three-dimensional characters and even the typical musical numbers don't hurt the story, but add to it.
27. High Noon
Best Western. Period. Gary Cooper walking through the empty streets to face his destiny is just awesome.
26. O Brother Where Art Thou
Take a look Wolfgang Petersen, this is how to take a famous work by Homer. The Coens put the Odyssee in a more contemporary setting and mix it with their typical edge and crazy ideas. Depper Dan man George Clooney has never been better.
25. Die Hard
Was always and will always be the best actioner ever. It invented a whole genre, made a big-time-star out of Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman the villain which every action villain will be measured against.
24. The Player
From all the ensemble pieces by Altman this is his best. Maybe because he takes on Hollywood, which is always fun to watch for a film buff, maybe because it is just crackling original. And yeah, my screen name comes from the Gallagher character "Larry Levy"
23. To Catch a Thief
One of Alfred Hitchocks few vacations into lighter territory, this is a sizzling caper-romance. Cary Grant and the gorgeous Grace Kelly have chemistry beyond belief. It is fun to watch no matter how often you see it.
22. GoodFellas
Martin Scorseses epic that should have won him the Oscar and stopped this ridiculous "will he ever get one"-talk. The life story of mafia-refugee Henry Hill is brilliantly brought to life by a nnever-been-better Ray Liotta and a bravura supporting turn by Joe Pesci. Mob movies don't get better than this.
21. It's a Wonderful Life
The second movie that invented the term Capraesque. A flop in its time it has become a christmas classic and rightfully so. Jimmie Stewart is fantastic as always and the story is heart-worming and full of hope.
