Post So Magic Mike...
Has no full frontal nudity! :noway: So I heard anyway.
What the fuck is the point of this movie then? Is looking at abs for two hours really so amazing? Without a shot or two of cock to mix things up this seems even more pointless and dreadful than before to me.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

This is not surprising. The film is clearly set at a male revue in the spirit of Chippendales. And those dancers don't show their penises.

As for the point of the movie: I know the TV spots are selling it as this light, mindless, sexy summer romp set to "Moves Like Jagger," but my understanding is Soderbergh and Tatum's main intent is to slice through the strip-club fantasy and show the real lives of the people involved, to show the male camaraderie and behind-the-scenes details, including the business side of the equation.

You will have to wait for the Sigur Rós video.

Um, a lot of male strippers don't even get fully naked anyway. Like Chippendales.

And there apparently is one brief penis shot in Magic Mike (although I think it's a prosthetic).

It is.

It's definitely disappointing. There's a lot of ass though. A couple of penis shots throughout the movie would have been nice. It didn't have to be when they were stripping. I mean, they know who the audience is. Why the hell not give them what they want?

I thought I'd read a long time ago Tatum went full-frontal but it was cut from the movie or something to avoid an NC-17. If that's the case I hope for an unrated Blu-ray release, though that won't likely happen. I mean, one probably will, but it won't deliver the goods. Unrated cuts rarely do.

You have to understand, though, this is a film by a real, talented director with a distinct vision and voice, not just a vehicle for eye candy. They are advertising it to bring the hot-and-bothered ladies and gays, sure, but this doesn't define the movie.

You wouldn't say to Steve McQueen, "Sure wish Shame had a few penetration shots. C'mon, Stevie, give papa what papa wants."

Besides, if this had penises in it, it would be NC-17 and play in 100 theatres, and you would be seeing it a couple months from now, Mike.

Full frontal is one of the few saving graces of Showgirls. You can't go wrong with full frontal nudity. Ask HBO and other cable networks.

Yet you'll never see a penis in any of Cinemax's softcore programming. ;)

One penis shot wouldn't mean an NC-17 though.

There is one penis shot in the movie.

You want more. Which would have meant an NC-17, especially since it also has sex scenes and is set in a sexual environment.

No there isn't. It's prosthetic. Joe's character is supposed to have an exaggeratedly huge penis, which can be seen behind the curtain in the red band trailer, and we get a glimpse of a prosthetic one.

I don't give a shit. :P

Would it seriously change the film so much if there were a quick flash of Tatum's penis?

Penises aren't even attractive. Go see Prometheus if you want to see eel-esque creatures. The men will be showing their bodies and asses.

You don't see male moviegoers saying, "Ugh, why didn't Halle Berry spread her legs and show her cunt in Swordfish?!" They just wanted to see the tits, you know?

It's a movie about male strippers! The goods should be delivered for those women and gay men going to see it. It wouldn't change the film, but it would be a very nice bonus. Showgirls had vag ;).

And I will argue, I think penises are plenty attractive. Vaginas on the other hand.... yuck. To each their own.

If men were seeing Halle Berry in a movie about strippers and she didn't show her "cunt," then yes, I do believe they'd complain. It's not like I'd complain about a lack of full-frontal male nudity in just any movie. I don't expect it in most. But there should have been some here. Can't help but feel cheated. Case closed .

Post Re: So Magic Mike...
Quote:
After the disappointing public and critical response to his two-part epic biography “Che” in 2009, Steven Soderbergh told several reporters he was planning on retiring from filmmaking and taking up another form of art — possibly painting.

But since then, the director has remained as prolific as ever, having directed several films (including “Contagion” and “Haywire”). “The Bitter Pill,” his follow-up to “Magic Mike,” is already wrapped, and he’s currently preparing to direct “Behind the Candelabra,” a biopic of the famed pianist Liberace starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.

So what gives? Here’s what Soderbergh said about his recent career choices and why he’s been working on noticeably lower budgets and smaller scales.

“In retrospect, the most frustrating thing about ‘Che’ was that the quality of the discussion wasn’t where I had hoped it would be. It broke out so obviously along ideological lines and nothing else was discussed. I always knew it would be a polarizing movie. I just thought there would be a more wide-ranging discussion.

“After that, I’ve been consciously looking for things that would be more fun to do. With ‘Contagion,’ I was trying to push into a genre category as far as I could. Even though it came out in the fall, I didn’t want it to feel like important Oscar-bait. I wanted to make something really entertaining. As far as the smaller scale goes, that hasn’t necessarily been by choice. I was fired off ‘Moneyball’ [he was replaced by Bennett Miller] and then got sort of shoved off ‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E.’ Those movies were on a larger scale.

“‘Contagion’ was $60 million. When I was on it, ‘Moneyball’ was $50 million. When you get into those kinds of numbers, the amount of time you spend doing the things you like to do decreases. I like being in a room with actors. But when the scale of a film grows, you are forced to wrangle with a bunch of other elements. And that’s not fun for me.

“I look at these huge movies that come out, and some of them are really, really impressive, and I think I couldn’t do it. ‘Haywire’ was really fun to do. I was stretching in a way I was comfortable with. Even though ‘Contagion’ may not appear that way, it was really fun to make, too. That’s all that motivates me now. After ‘Che,’ I have no desire to make another quote-unquote important movie. I’ve been cured of that.”

Quote:
Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh wants you to know that there is more to his new movie Magic Mike than the trailers and TV ads would have you believe.

“I really like the marketing campaign,” says the Oscar-winning director of Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven and Erin Brockovich. “I was the one who wanted to sell the movie like it’s fun, because it is mostly fun.

“It may not be exactly what people expect. But I don’t think the film is different in a way that’s antagonistic to the audience.”

Then, after a pause, Soderbergh addresses the elephant in the room.

“Look, this is not a movie that is exclusively aimed at women and gay men. To what extent are women going to be able to talk their boyfriends into going? I don’t know. But I don’t think guys will be sitting in the theater thinking, ‘This is torture.’ Ten minutes into the movie, they’ll realize they are not being excluded from this experience at all.”

Magic Mike, which opens Friday, is a comedy about male strippers — about how men think and behave when they become objects of desire, a privilege usually reserved for women in popular culture. The ads promise playful debauchery, but the movie’s real focus is the male psyche. Compared to the protagonists of Shampoo or American Gigolo, the guys in Magic Mike are relatively chaste. Mostly, they’re just drunk on the thrill of getting paid for being the center of attention. Naturally, it goes to their heads.

The film sprang from a casual conversation between Soderbergh and actor Channing Tatum on the set of the action movie Haywire in 2010. Between takes, they talked about Tatum’s production company and the projects he was developing.

LOL, seriously...I could only imagine how much of a creep I'd come across if I were here complaining that there is not enough vagina in, say, Chloe (or any other film). For some reason it seems fine with people demanding penises, but something is telling me that if there were a bunch of guys disappointed that there is no Olivia Munn's labia on display here it'd come across as very weird.

Just an observation.

Exactly. Mike refutes this above (saying if Halle Berry played a stripper, men would be disappointed if she didn't show her vagina), but I disagree.

Gay men tend to be the biggest horn-dogs imaginable. This might be the root of the problem.
