These critics must not have seen the Whole Ten Yards, the Punisher, Big Bounce, or Connie and Carla.

Napoleon Dynamite was much better than those, and Van Helsing was somewhat better than those.

When most critics gave their yearly worst, they normally single out the ones they don't understand why others liked, so it's not the worst in the absolute sense. That's why Time said Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the worst film of year, although that drives people crazy.

BTW, all these lists have been posted in the Critics Top 10 list thread, so I'm not sure if we need a separate thread for every one of them. This is also very old news. One can assume something like this would've been posted long time ago and look for them. If that thread isn't visible enough, we can move it to the movie forum.

I read EW's list in the magazine, and I really think they were basing the worst on the worst, not off of what others thought. It was very apparent Lisa Schwarzbaum really hated ND from her comments on why she picked it in the bottom 5.

Damn, I wish I read her comments. Are they on the EW site?

Time named Eternal Sunshine as the worst film of the year!?! HA! I guess they're trying to completely ruin their credibility when it comes to movies, because that's absolutely ridiculous. Not only is it stupid to name the 2nd best reviewed and critically adored film of the year as THE worst film of the year, but it's also obvious that there are dozens of films that are CLEARLY more eligible for worst film of the year, no matter how hard you critique Eternal Sunshine. :x

PEACE, Mike ;)

It seems as though, like xiayun said, the major publications (Time, Newsweek, EW, etc.) like to be 'daring' when making these lists and put lauded films on their worst-of lists. For instance, in 2001, they (Newsweek, I believe) panned Moulin Rouge and gave it the title of worst film of the year.

It's stupid, really, and tends to be more of an attention-grabber than anything.

Time has been doing this in the last several years. If my memory is correct, they also named The Hours the worst picture of the year, and either it or another publication did the same for Dancer in the Dark.

As Dkmuto said, mostly it's the few publications who are trying to grab attention. The ones given out by critics such as Eberts and Roeper look much more sane.

Well, Remember that rave review he gave for that movie when it came out. I believe he gave it an A-.

Well, first of all, they don't review ever movie, and if I remember this right, I believe the Punisher and Connie and Carla managed to get C's from them (Whole Ten Yards and Big Bounce got D's)

Eternal Sunshine as the worst movie of the year just to be daring is incredibly stupid. Eternal Sunshine easily beats almost every other movie, and even if they didn't like it, I doubt they thought it actually was the worst film. I hated Napolean Dynamite, but I didn't name it the worst movie of the year, just for daring. Catwoman DESERVES that honor.
