Scorsese and De Niro reunited for a mafia flick!
"Paramount Pictures has set Steve Zaillian to adapt "I Heard You Paint Houses," the book about the mob assassin who many believe was involved in the death of Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa.
Martin Scorsese is attached to direct. Robert De Niro will play Frank "the Irishman" Sheeran, who is reputed to have carried out more than 25 mob murders. The film will be produced by Scorsese and Tribeca partners De Niro and Jane Rosenthal.
The film's title refers to mob slang for contract killings, and the resulting blood splatter on walls and floors. Variety says the book was written by Charles Brandt, who befriended Sheeran shortly before the latter's death in 2003.
Among the crimes Sheeran confessed to Brandt, according to the 2004 book, was the killing and dismemberment of Hoffa, carried out on orders from mob boss Russell Bufalino."http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=49297_______________________________________________________________________________ I thought Scorsese said The Departed would be his last film dealing with the mob. I'm pretty happy about this news, though!

Oh yes!! I'd be happy if Scorsese did nothing but mob films from here on! This sounds great.
I'd love it if they could get Jack Nicholson to play Hoffa haha

This will star Pacino, Pesci, and De Niro. Sounds excellent, right? Yes. And it probably will be good. But it's hard to get excited for it when it is a Netflix movie. Will it even come out in cinemas? Can Netflix movies be nominated for Oscars?
And the book it's based on is called I Heard You Paint Houses: Frank ‘The Irishman’ Sheeran and the Inside Story of the Mafia, the Teamsters, and the Final Ride by Jimmy Hoffa. Don't look forward to that screen credit.

A few Netflix movies are in the Oscar hunt this year: Mudbound, The Meyerowitz Stories, and, in the makeup category, Bright.

It's called The Irishman and is set to use some major de-aging tech to give us younger versions of the main characters/actors.
I do hope it gets more than a limited oscar run in theatres though.

Re: Scorsese and De Niro reunited for a mafia flick!
It will be interesting to see what happens re: this film in theatres. I know there is this sense of, "Oh, this is Scorsese doing an epic crime film with the actors most closely associated with him in the 1980s and '90s. It deserves a proper theatrical release, even if it is a Netflix production," etc., etc. But Netflix is paying a lot of money for this, and I suspect they do not want to undercut their brand and the idea of delivering new, desirable films directly to their customers.

Did Bright play in some cinemas to qualify for the Oscars then?

It's mostly limited to NY/LA markets but they do give several of their films very small, low profile theatrical releases where they don't even release box office totals. Titles that have gotten this treatment since they entered the film market based on what I can remember are (not including docs): Beasts of No Nation Tallulah Barry The Little Prince The Discovery War Machine Okja First They Killed My Father Our Souls At Night Mudbound The Meyerowitz Stories BrightI'm sure they'll do something similar with this one.

Re: Scorsese and De Niro reunited for a mafia flick!
I just think being that it's Netflix, it won't get any awards traction, which is a shame because it's Scorsese, De Niro, and Pesci! And also watching a film like this at home just doesn't feel like something I want to do.

Re: Scorsese and De Niro reunited for a mafia flick!
The Netflix release model is stupid. Even though it was only decent I'm glad I saw Bright theatrically (as I did with Mudbound at Sundance before Netflix bought it and War Machine). The experience is so different.
I hate their way of releasing things with no fanfare that are smaller scale too. The brilliant I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year, was completely buried by them.

Re: Scorsese and De Niro reunited for a mafia flick!
I believe they are still figuring out how to launch movies. I sense a few genuinely flopped even by Netflix's mysterious standard. I can't imagine, for instance, War Machine (being an expensive Brad Pitt film) met their expectations in regard to buzz and viewership. They do brilliantly with TV: everyone (not everyone, but among the plugged-in set) heard of 13 Reasons Why, The Crown, Mindhunter, Stranger Things, etc.
I bet Mudbound and The Meyerowitz Stories reached more eyes on Netflix than they would have in a couple hundred theatres, though. And one has to respect the money and autonomy they are gladly giving to a lot of directors. I find their involvement in movies exciting.

Re: Scorsese and De Niro reunited for a mafia flick!
Yes, I agree. This isn't an "Oh, I hate any progression and evolution in the way films are distributed" scenario. At least, not for me. It's just that good and/or important films are going by unnoticed because of their relatively inexperienced PR game. But I am pleased Netflix is around, competing for eyes on screens and money in wallets.

Pacino in a Scorsese film? Talk about long overdue. I cant wait, what a cast, and seeing Pesci back? Awesome, this looks like a swan song for all of them ,hopefully they knock it out of the park.
