Re: David Fincher vs. Christopher Nolan
Well, Nolan's never made a film as bad as The Game, Benjamin Button or A3, and TDK/Memento rank up there with the absolute best Fincher could ever conceive or creating.
So, Nolan.

Re: David Fincher vs. Christopher Nolan
Hmm, by my calculation your winner should be Nolan: "Bad" cancels out the "great"for Fincher. Both have an equal number of films under "Meh" and under "Very Good",. but Nolan has one more under "Good/Decent"

Make this a three-way battle and Bay would trump them both.

Re: David Fincher vs. Christopher Nolan
Nolan Memento- 10/10 Insomnia- 7/10 Batman Begins- 8/10 The Prestige- 8/10 The Dark Knight- 7.5/10 Inception- 8/10 The Dark Knight Rises- 8.5/10
Overall- 57/70 (81.4)
Fincher Alien 3 (Kind of a wash but I'll do Producers Cut)- 6.5/10 Seven- 9/10 The Game- 8.5/10 Fight Club- 9/10 Panic Room- 7/10 Zodiac- 10/10 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button- 8/10 The Social Network- 7.5/10
Overall- 81.9 (84.2 Without Alien 3)
It's kind of hard for me to count Alien 3 as a Fincher film. Almost half the footage he shot was cut (As we've seen in the producers cut the scenes they found add a lot) and he had no say in the final product. So even though Memento is my 3rd favorite film of all time, and overall a more consistent director, Fincher gets my vote. Very close match up though. I'd like to see either of them really take a chance down the line out of their comfort zone.

Re: David Fincher vs. Christopher Nolan
Nolan makes larger scale and more commercial films. If he solely focused on small scale artsy stuff he would trump Finch with ease.

(not a bad film in the bunch)

The Top 5 are just brilliant. Fincher reaches higher highs but also has lower lows. Still have to go with Fincher.
Now lets see how Gone Girl and Interstellar fair.

Last time I checked, five trumps four. Fincher wins.

Re: David Fincher vs. Christopher Nolan
But why not? Fincher has a 38% chance of making a bad movie, while Nolan only has a 20% chance. I would think if in a blind movie test, you'd rather risk watching a Nolan film over a Fincher film.

The flipside is that Fincher has a better chance of making a great movie than Nolan, considering Fincher has made two already and Nolan has made zero. If I was determining which director I dislike the most, then I would count the bad movies and not the good ones. But seeing as though this is about which director I prefer, only the good ones are counted.

Re: David Fincher vs. Christopher Nolan
Yeah I'd go by the number of great movies a director has made vs. the number of bad ones. Average movies are everywhere - its the handful of great ones a year that we all want to see.

Re: David Fincher vs. Christopher Nolan
I really like the comparison here as the two brood on darkness, crime, and psychological examination. Also, both of them make films widely popular here at WoKJ; films which I do not love as much as the average Magnus, but still greatly enjoy. Still in comparing the two of the limited films I have seen in each's repertoire:
1. Fight Club 2. The Dark Knight 3. Curious Case of Benjamin Button 4. The Social Network 5. Memento 6. Batman Begins 7. The Dark Knight Rises 8. Inception
So I guess I have to give the golden fiddle to Mr. Fincher based on my limitations.

I think I have se7en and zodiac on my dvr. So those will be watched eventually. I'm sure I'll see Memento one day... but probably none of the others.

Re: David Fincher vs. Christopher Nolan
Insomnia is really underrated with great performances by Pacino, Swank and especially Williams. To this date Williams in Insomnia and Pierce in Memento are still the best performances in any Nolan film. The Game is great too. Skip Dragon Tattoo and Panic Room, and Alien 3 especially if you don't like the series. But it is fun to watch a sequel piss on everything that came before it.

Chip and DIB - you really need to watch Seven and Zodiac.
