The US line up this year is pretty strong!

Hmmm. I'm most interested to hear the buzz from A History Of Violence and A Bitter Sweet Life than anything else, but overall it looks like a pretty strong lineup.

History of Violence is the one I want to hear from the most. Hopfully it gets released this fall or early next year.

Woody Allen needs to slow down a bit. But Ebert says its Hitchcockian, which is interesting. Otherwise I would think it sounds a bit like Dickens, and slightly tired. I was already a bit disappointed with Melinda & Melinda. But it'll be nice to see if Allen does approach this from class issues instead of his usual personality ones. Eh, I still can't get that excited over it yet.

I read the other day Egoyan's new film will get hit up with NC-17 ratings. I don't think it matters too much since he never does less than an R, and alot of his movies here were NC17 or unrated releases, but I hope it's a good movie. Anyone heard anything about it yet?

A History of Violence looks very promising, with David Cronenberg directing and Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, and Ed Harris in the cast. It will be released in the U.S. on September 30th, and my anticipation level is certainly rising. Here are its IMDb and RT pages:

What kind of influence does Cannes have on the Oscars? Could we see Bill Murray up for Best Actor because of Broken Flowers' success, or is there usually no effect? And, what about Tommy Lee Jones? Kevin Spacey got some buzz last year for Beyond the Sea (not for the movie but for his performance) and, of course, Million Dollar Baby took home the grand prize. I don't know if the Academy likes actors turned directors, but Jones' film has gotten off to a good start.

Well I'm not the expert, but let's take an educated guess...

Marty (I believe) is the last film to win the Golden Palm and the Oscar. This was in 1955.

The Pianist (2002), Secrets & Lies (1996), Pulp Fiction (1994), The Piano (1993), Missing (1982), All That Jazz (1979), Apocalypse Now (1979), Taxi Driver (1976), The Conversation (1974), MASH (1970) are all the Golden Palm winners from after 1970 that have went on to get an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

My general theory is that Cannes is the kind of festival that can help films that are theorized to have good Oscar chances, but it doesn't really help those films that skew too much indie. Cannes definately put The Pianist on the map, but it's stats, Adrien Brody and a universal Oscar aiming theme are what got it there. Put aside my own distaste of Jim Jarmusch, I think his film is going to go more the way of Elephant (winner two years ago). If Bill Murray is strong enough, he may raise out of the funk and get a nomination.

And Kevin Bacon is in an Atom Egoyan film, and that can go pretty much the same way. Again, all these actors can't really *use* the Cannes stat because they didn't win. I expect better for A History of Violence in front of critics/audiences.

But Tommy Lee Jones did win, and it looks like his may have the perfect spunk to make it farther. He may be *the Cannes* success this year... but I would only look for a nomination.
