Name Their Masterpiece: The Snobs Edition
I was inspired by this thread ( viewtopic.php?f=2&t=42194), so I am doing a sequel for this subforum. This will be harder to do because these directors made several masterpieces, so start the brainstorming.

Alain Resnais | Last Year at Marienbad |
Andrei Tarkovsky | Stalker |
Carl Theodor Dreyer | Gertrud |
Federico Fellini | 8½ |
François Truffaut | Jules et Jim |
Ingmar Bergman | Cries and Whispers |
Jacques Rivette | Céline and Julie Go Boating |
Jacques Tati | Playtime |
Jean Renoir | The Rules of the Game |
Jean Vigo | L'Atalante |
Jean-Luc Godard | Breathless |
Kenji Mizoguchi | Sansho The Bailiff |
Krzysztof Kieslowski | Red |

Re: Name Their Masterpiece: The Snobs Edition
Dear Bergmaniac, Just so yr aware, this thread isnt being ignored. I just feel really bad calling the one film I've seen by a director their "masterpiece", even if, yes, that film is a "masterpiece." There are also at least one or two directors listed who, I think, I've seen nothing by. Keeping that in mind, I can agree with these as my "favorites":
Abbas Kiarostami The Wind Will Carry Us Andrei Tarkovsky Stalker Federico Fellini 8½ Jacques Tati Playtime Jean Vigo L'Atalante Jean-Luc Godard Breathless Michelangelo Antonioni L'Avventura Satyajit Ray Pather Panchali
And (again, understand my knowledge is limited), throw these out as my choices for some others:
Akira Kurosawa Seven Samurai Alain Resnais Hiroshima, mon amour François Truffaut The 400 Blows Ingmar Bergman The Seventh Seal Kenji Mizoguchi Ugetsu Krzysztof Kieslowski Double Life of Veronique Luchino Visconti The Leopard Luis Buñuel The Phantom of Liberty Rainer Werner Fassbinder The Marriage of Maria Braun Robert Bresson A Man Escaped Roberto Rossellini The Flowers of St. Francis Sergei Eisenstein Strike Vittorio De Sica The Bicycle Thief Wong Kar-Wai In the Mood for Love Yasujiro Ozu Floating Weeds

Re: Name Their Masterpiece: The Snobs Edition
Uhhhh? Am I the only one on the planet who doesn't like Umberto D.?
My favorite De Sica is either Bicycle Thieves, Miracle in Milan, or Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.
Mid-range De Sica for me is Garden of the Finzi-Continis and Two Women.
In fact, Umberto D. and Children are Watching Us were just too expected (?) and heavy-handed for me in their expectedness, if that makes any sense?
I have Rules of the Game and have been dying to watch it for ages. When I survive this weekend and get to veg out of vacation I will see it!

Re: Name Their Masterpiece: The Snobs Edition
I always thought Bleu was better than Rouge. Always. I actually prefer Blanc to Rouge.
And although not my favorite of his films, I have to put a shout out to Welles' F For Fake.

It is very unfortunate, I have so little time. I probably missed a few though, but yeah, most embarrassing.

As far as Abbas Kiarostami is concerned, I feel Taste of Cherry is superior to The Wind Will Carry Us. I found the later a little tedious. I dunno.
