Post The Ballad of Jack and Rose
"The Ballad of Jack and Rose" is IFC Films' most expensive production ever ( $2 million budget) .

I love the trailer, it seems like and very beautiful and heartbreaking movie. Camilla Belle is very stunning.

This movie enjoys a good opening.
From hollywoodreporter.com.
Quote:
IFC's "The Ballad of Jack and Rose" opened in four locations and grossed an estimated $60,461. The drama, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and written and directed by Rebecca Miller, had a per-theater average of a robust $15,115.

Several famous reviewers love this movie. (ie. Roger Ebert, Lisa Schwarzbaum, Kenneth Turan)

However, the reviews are mixed overall, so I don't think that this movie can grossed more than $500,000 in US theaters.
But this $2 million movie would make profit on ancillary sales. (Today, even a limited theatrical release can trigger a variety of ancillary sales, from home video to pay television.)

neo and i were talking about this movie. i hope someone sees it and confirms my trailer-based suspicions about a borderline incestuous relationship between the title father and daughtr. I would be willing to put down money on it had Day-Lewis not been part of this project. He tends to be smarter about these things. I don't want to see a repeat of The Crush.

You would find the answer in here.

BTW, I think that if two different directors separately direct the same story, we would get two different movies. "Exorcist: The Beginning"(Renny Harlin's version and Paul Schrader's version) is a good example.

Not to get this thread off track but Jack and Rose were the leading character names in Titanic. Dicaprio was Jack, Winslet was Rose. Seems unlikely to be a coincidence given how famous and recent Titanic was. Maybe there's some sort of subtle purpose to those names in this, some analogy, that I don't get?

Archie, I don't know about that. More likely Rose has to do with yonic flower imagery, budding, flowering, etc.

I was right about the incest theme. You could spot it a mile away in the trailer.

Incest theme just too thorny in 'Rose'

Phenomenal acting, plus intelligent direction and themes, put "The Ballad of Jack and Rose" above other indie films about loss of innocence.

At the same time, there is something garish about watching a father and daughter struggle with the snake of incest in their ill-advised Garden of Eden.

A stringy Daniel Day-Lewis in dense Scottish accent plays Jack, the last holdout of a former island commune off the East Coast. He's an angry, uneasy man, particularly irked by a land developer (Beau Bridges) encroaching on his untamed wilderness.

With a bad ticker, Jack's days are winding down just as his ripe daughter, Rose (Camilla Belle), is getting to that certain age. Jack and Rose have always been close, perhaps too close...

No thanks. Its not that I mind someone doing a movie about the topic, I've just have yet to see anyone do smart one about it (Angels and Insects, Vertical Ray of the Sun, etc), and The Ballad of Jack and Rose looks to uphold that tradition.

In fact, another very well-received incest movie is showing in US.

(Sorry, I wouldn't talk about the name of that movie in here; incest is a very important "twist" for that movie.)
