Post NIGHTS OF CABIRIA Movie Weekend!
Well, movie night is tricky when we're all so busy. But it seems a couple of us got our hands on it and are going to watch it sometime this weekend.

Yeah, Chris, Lennier, Makeshift, and I, so far. Everyone else please feel free to join, We'd love to hear from you about my other most favourite Fellini movie.

Get psyched, get Masina, and enjoy!

p.s. I will update more when I take another break from studying later tonight.

I can't wait!

I watched this Friday night, but I haven't had the time to write a review or anything. I will say that I enjoyed it a lot more than La Dolce Vita, but I also watched this in English where LDV didn't have that option. I have to be somewhere at the moment, but when I get back, I will write a decent review, I promise.

Did you like how she guarded herself against being fooled by love and hope twice, and both times was ruined by it? Then when she's smiling at the end through her tears, you realize Cabiria knows she's going to make the same mistakes over again.

I remember hearing an interview once where Fellini said he kind of believes in the triumph of hope. That its not about where his characters actually are, but how they aspire to be somewhere else, even when its detrimental. I always loved Cabiria as being one of his more optimistic films. He's not cycnical in it, he really feels for Cabiria and her experiences and failures, even though she's worse off by the end than when she's first pushed into the river in the beginning.

I'm glad you liked it Chris. Masina is one of my favorites actresses of all time. Her facial expressions! I consider her the female equivalent of Chaplin sometimes, plus she's just nailed this role so sympathetically. Its really her finest moment. She's always good in all her roles, and I liked her in Variety Lights, La Strada, Giuliette of the Spirits, and Ginger & Fred, but none stand out as much as Cabiria.

BTW, I believe she was Fellini's second wife (?) and that she did radio before the war as well. I think they met while doing radio. Don't quote me on this, as someone just told me it, but it makes sense because alot of these classic directors were men who transitioned from radio to film. I can't believe someone like her did radio though, considering so much of her strength is also in her facial gestures, which would have been utterly lost with out the screen.

She was Fellini's female "muse" and Marcello was his male one. Between the two of them they probably show up in three quarters of all Fellini's films, and finally played opposite eachother (the only time) in Ginger and Fred. Too bad I think she wasn't doing well when everyone got together and did Intervista. :-(

Yes, I did like that. I loved the ending.

She really did a great job with this role. I was going to mention something about her facial expressions. When I watch a movie that has been dubbed, I have to rely heavily on facial expressions and body movements to get a feel for the performance, and she nails it.

Although the ending was great, my favorite scene has to be the one in the theatre. That was near perfection.

Yes, gardenia, you would like this film. I have a feeling...

And Chris, when she's picking flowers for her lover. The first time I saw that I cried. Four times later, I still love it to high heaven, but I can contain myself. :-) I remember. It was freshman year in Italian beginners. You know how every lenaguage class gives you films to watch? This was the first one. Projected big screen too. I remember thinking the time and place was a pain, but I was mistaken.

I am so happy you liked it.

More details?

A review from nearly two years, ago. I would change it if I had the time right now. So no snickering...

That was a fairly spot-on review. What would you change about it?

I got it from the school library, put it in, but fell asleep. I'll get to it, though.

Unfortunately, it is a very, very old VHS copy, and most of the subtitles in the opening scene (as far as I saw) were basically impossible to read. Hopefully it gets easier to read. Night scenes would help.

You thought it was A+ worthy too?

Probably not anything major, just the writing, sentence structure, maybe give it a bit more length. I used to really fight to get an entire full page in, and now most of my reviews are a page and a half to two. I just like to talk in a little more detail. I used to be a bit afraid of "giving too much away" and would sometimes make language very ambiguous for fear of that.

Actually yoshue, I've seen Cabiria big screen three times before the major DVD shift in retrospective building. The subtitles were always a problem in that film. So if the original reels have that problem, you need to get a cleaned up DVD to even have a chance. But please watch it when you're not sleepy. I don't want you to not love it for "exterior" factors (interior ones are allowed, but I might cry myself to sleep a for a few nights).

I haven't even given my grade yet?

I'd say A-, while I would give La Dolce Vita a B+. I don't normally give A+ grades, so don't worry, heh. I think I've given maybe 5 movies that grade.
