FRIENDS WITH MONEY - chick-flick with balls?
80% on RT at the moment with early reviews. I am very interested in this because of the talent. Catherine Keener, Frances McDormand, Joan Cusack and Jennifer Aniston.
Doesn't come out until August here unfortunately. Hopefully i can convince Sony to release it for mother's day.
dolce, lennier, anyone will you see this?

I'll see it just because of Jennifer Anniston, but I've really not heard a lot about the film as of late.
Any word on if it is going limited or semi-wide?

I'm sure it'll go wide. Only *really* small enterprises seem to go limited this time of the year.
After I watched Fargo a few weeks ago, I researched Frances on imdb and noticed this. The cast ranges from superb (Frances McDormand) to "I Need to stick to television" (Aniston).
Nonetheless, the reviews are encouraging and I'm a sucker for these types.

I like the cast a lot (save Aniston) but the trailer made it look too stereotypical and not all that interesting. Unless the reviews are ridiculously good I will wait till it hits DVD.

Lack of reviews isn't encouraging. I'll see it if it stays fresh.

It should expand wide but probably not more than 800 theaters.

Answer to my own question:
800 theaters on April 21 after a terrific debut this past weekend on 28 theaters.

Kypade saw this a few weeks back at the Florida Film Festival. The review should be on the main site soon.

Saw it today after class.
My initial thoughts are varied. Technically I think it was fairly well done, with exceptional performances coming from Keener and McDormand.
I'm hesitant to go so far as to say it was an exceptional film, however. Friends with Money kind of teases one into believing its more than it is. The structure is one I already tend to love, so I have to slow down and really think if their experiences resonated with me, or if I just liked the "feel." Sometimes that's not important, and feel is enough, but Holofcenter meant their collective experiences to remark on female mid-life crisis.
The woven stories, where each of four women struggles to determine her own happiness. But, there experiences just "are," and because of that, I was hoping for stronger attention to detail. They were caricatures, but each woman's experiences were meant to be illustrative and stand on its own. They didn't. There were bright moments, however.
edit*** Full review is up on the front page.
I still am unsure of this movie. I would say it was technically excellent, but then, when one thinks about some parts, especially the handling of Fanny, it's not. But I was still engaged while it was unfolding, so I'm guessing its the strength of the actresses? I also didn't mind that it didn't "say" much, but some people are going to walk away thinking, "Wait, so what's Holofcenter trying to say?"

Review from Everyone's A Critic:
The first eighty minutes of the film is nearly unbearable. It's miserable people doing miserable things to each other for no apparent reason other than to be miserable. I don't mind films were there aren't many likeable characters, but the film has to at least be interesting on some level, whether it's visually or through the story. There has to be a hook. This one does not have one. However, the final ten minutes almost make up for the dreadful first eighty. The characters actually, *gasp*, STOP treating each other like shit, and they all have a chance to show a smidge of humanity. It's an incredible breath of fresh air. The introduction of Marty into the film nearly saves it, and I wish he were in it for the entire run time.
The technical aspects were so-so. Solid acting, but both the screenplay and direction are pretty bad for different reasons.
Anywho, I'm giving it a C. It was treading into D- territory before the great final act.

Eh, the more I think about it, the less enamored I am with this film. I think about the strength of indivudal perfomrances, but realize no one had any chemistry with eachother. They were all on one-woman shows.
I think the "hook" was just the statement that some women go through these experiences. And I'd say enough people are pretty caddy and unsympathetic to eachother. The odd thing is, usually when they get married its an excuse to split with those people. Only the strong relationships survive a significant partner. Or the lazy people who hand out with someone from highschool they can't stand just because they have no energy to try anything else. Something? I keep thinking there was more to this, because some of it is very easy for me to relate to, but its not very exploratory of those places, or why people act like this. As a general description of people's lives, its nothing new, and it doesn't really go anywhere. Its true everyone was pretty histile, and there was especially no point for Franny to even exist in this script. Maybe if it had just been three women, and each was amounted more time, the experience would be more illuminating and the technique of the film less choppy?

Hmm...I kind of had a similar reaction to the film as you Dolce. While on one hand I loved it, it really was a one woman times four show.
There was no chemistry between them, and sometimes their interwoven conversations were almost painful, but when each character was explored it is where the film really shone. While the experience of the film itself was quite enjoyable, it really didn't leave me anything tangible when I walked away. It was sort of ... what exactly was the point the director was trying to make, just as you said.
Sure, it was an exploration of mid-life in woman, but that sort of thing has been explored before and better. I can't think of the film at the second but I know I've seen this sort of territory covered on numerous occasions in the past.
That isn't to say that I didn't like Friends with Money, because I did, in fact giving it a B+. I've always been a fan of Aniston, though she was probably the weakest of the leading ladies, or in fact the weakest of any of the leading characters in this case.
So yeah, it was good, but didn't leave anything once the credits had rolled. A fun journey in its exploration but it really didn't explore enough to actually "find" something if you catch what I'm saying?
