Well you can't confirm Infernal Affairs II since you're the one who recommended it...just a few posts up.

I'll put the other ones through asap.

I might be REALLY tired. I thought about who might have recommended it, so I went through the whole page to see if there was a post of mine...and I didn't find it.

Sure thing senor. I was just thinking about the rise of Latin America cinema in the international markets. Its like it used to be considered case specific, but lately directors have been using these regional experiences as allegory and speaking to a much wider audiance. Its very interesting. Go for it.

The Motorcycle Diaries matched!

What about Women on the Verge...

C'mon. How can a foreign film list have the dramatic Almodovar and miss out on the raunchiest stuff ever recorded in a foreign country (that 16 year olds can see... ) ;)

Anyways, thanks on TMD ;)

Ah! You had Women and Motorcycles up there and I somehow missed them. Hmmm, women and motorcycles....sounds like a song The Cars would sing.

The Cars?

Perhaps something AC/DC would sing. But, I don't like 'em, so I wouldn't really know.

I forgot I had Motorcycles up there too.

l'll second The Sweet Hereafter...can't believe that's still not on.

l have quite a few of these coming up from blockbuster, so may second some more in the near future (Cleo from 5 - 7, Nowhere in Africa, Seven Samurai, etc...)

And l hope l;m not the only one who's seen and loved The 400 Blows. So amazing. Match it, someone!  just kidding of course. except not really.

w00t! Thanks for finally seconding Hereafter Kypade! Also, I'm the one who suggested Cleo from 5-7 and Nowhere in Africa, so I can't wait to hear from you on them. Let me know about Cleo, I usually am not such a fan of French "New Wave" (I think this is what it is considered) but I loved Cleo. also, I am ashamed to admit that I have not seen the 400 Blows, but I think LMR has, so if you hound him to peak in here, maybe he'll second it. There are a couple others who are far more French film aficionados than i am, so i'm sure someone will second it soon.

You'll have to look to the horror fans for I'm Not Scared. I remember when it came out in theatres last year and I *almost* got myself to see it. I tried, seriously, I just wimped out as usual. Its kind of fun building up all this excitement around them, makes them fun to watch when I finally do. The only problem is the when part can drag out for wuite some time. So Scared was very good? I heard excellent stuff about it when it came out. The trailer was touched with Italian sentimentalism cinematography, so ooked beautiful. Would be an odd coupling with finding a body, which I think is what happens to the boy.

Ohhhhh, tell me what you think of Nowhere and Cleo, I can't wait to hear from you. I hope I have not lead you astray in my suggestions? French film is very tricky for me, so with the exception of Keislowski, I rally haven't found that many gems. Cleo from 5 to 7 is one of them. You'll love Nowhere in Africa. I don't know many people who have seen it, but the ones that have all agreed. Its pretty much only the Germans that make really smart, different movies about the Holocaust. That's one of the reasons I'm going to go see downfall as soon as it opens up here, because I know they don't falls back on cliche nearly so much.

I'm Not Scared is really not horror at all. Some parts are pretty...hm...haunting, l guess, and quite suspensefull, but nothing gorey or really "horror" like. Technically it;s very good, with, as you point out, cinematography being one of it's best aspects.

And, you were 100% dead on about Nowhere in Africa. Amazing film. l don't have time to write much right now, (off to see The Assassination of Richard Nixon) but it's brilliant. Definitely one of the best "Holocaust" films l've seen, if that's what its considered, and so many amazing relationships are covered it's almost mind boggling. l can't help think that if it were a book assigned for school it's the kinda thing where you would be asked to write a paper on one of them (relationships). l especially loved Regina and Owuor's. So yeah, definitely a second from me, and great recomendation, Dolce. :2up:

Three people already named Run Lola Run but it's not on the list yet? Let me add another voice for that movie.

If the English-speaking The Full Monty and The Sweet Hereafter are eligible for this list, than France's Leon (The Professional) definitely deserves to be on here as well!

I'd also nominate My Neighbor Totoro, my favorite Hayao Miyazaki film.

Has anyone seen A Chinese Ghost Story (1987), Once Upon a Time in China (1991), or Human Meat Buns (1992)?

Kypade, if you're really excited about nowhere, please feel free to start an entire thread on it, sometimes the titles of threads draw people's attention to it, and they're more likely to peak in, and if they find it interesting, check out the movie. I would love to hear from you, and will whole-heartedly respond.

(glances over the fifty so far, twirling his moustache...)

gah! three miyazakis, and no porco? don't get me wrong, i love miyazaki to bits... but i prefer PORCO ROSSO (the crimson pig) to the three already in there. in fact, if i'm honest, princess mononoke was a bit of a let down for me. everyone else seems to like it - what's wrong with me? hmm...

on a similar note, i'm glad amelie's in there, because i *do* love it... but i prefer THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN. any takers? i also love delicatessen, but i think the underground guys - troglodytes? - were silly + underdeveloped. a great film, but not quite an a+!

oh - and i'd also add AKIRA :)
