Is there a reason this is in there? Seriously, it's not an indie movie. A movie from a major company, major stars and a major Oscar contender isn't an "indie." It should be in the regular forum. As for Mike's thread, it should have stayed his own thread, he put a lot of hard work in it. Seriously, this place can be so fucking retarded sometimes. Even GEISHA has threads there and this has way more Oscar buzz than that.

Sorry movie35, Brokeback Mountain is nominated for Indepedent Spirit Award. It costs less than $20M to make. It's backed by Focus Feature. So yes, it is considered an indie. Memoirs of a Geisha costs $85M and is backed by Sony and Columbia. Totally different scope.

Thats it! I can't wait to see it this weekend. I know its finals and all, but I swear I won't sleep through Sunday if it means having two hours to watch this in its first weekend. I expect sold-out shows here, and even though I haven't heard much talk about it here yet, I have a feeling its going to have a warm reception.

Really, Lee is going to mix it up, and I stated elsewhere I feel like he's creating a composite of all his best works. The rural and real-time aspects, the whimsy, of Sense and Sensibility, the fast landscapes (that play a big part of the film and are a character in their own rights) of Crouching Tiger, and I *guess* you could mention the past dealings of homosexuality in Wedding Banquet, though that one is pushing the limit of creativity. I see this movie having not one ounce of humour, unlike banquet which was quite a good comedy. This will be melodramatic, unless he goes for incredibly understated.

Can't. I am meeting some other people and we are going to do see Syriana. But I will do it this weekend if it kills me. :-)

I remember hearing rumors early in the filming of “Brokeback Mountain” about how they planned on toning the film down and having it not be explicit like the story it’s based on, which really worried me. I didn’t want them to make another toned down gay love story; I wanted to finally see a gay film with some balls (no pun intended) that would say “the hell with what people think” and not tone its content down for the sake of not wanting to offend people. If it makes some people uncomfortable then good, because until they are forced to face their prejudices only then can they get over them. Seeing two guys passionately kiss in a movie, or especially have real, raw sex is definitely something you don’t see often, which is one reason why it makes a lot of people uncomfortable. But if people start seeing stuff like this in movies/real life then eventually it won’t be so shocking and won’t even be a big deal anymore. Thankfully these rumors ended up being wrong and the movie isn’t supposed to shy away from the sexuality.

One thing that originally got me interested was the cast, mostly Michelle Williams and my personal favorite actress, Anna Faris. When I read Anna got a role in the movie I could have pinched myself I was so sure I was dreaming. I know it’s just a supporting role, but just her being involved makes me happy. I hope she is actually given something to do in it and has a chance to shine. Obviously Michelle Williams will have more of a chance though. She was always my favorite of the people on “Dawson’s Creek” and I found her highly talented, yet she seemed to really fly under the radar and is an underrated actress. Now with “Brokeback Mountain” she looks like she’ll be given her break and her performance seems like it will make people sit up and take notice of her. I’m very excited that she has a really good chance at getting a “Best Supporting Actress” Academy Award nomination, and quite possibly win. I think she’ll be terrific here, and from what I’ve heard she is.

After seeing the trailer and hearing all of the rave early reviews it got from film festivals and professional critics that have seen it my expectations have quickly risen and I’m now expecting this to be an amazing film. The awards buzz is incredible and I’m sure it will receive nominations for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Heath Ledger), and Best Supporting Actress (Michelle Williams). This is a major contender for the Oscars this year and something like this winning would be an amazing step for the gay community. Forget that the movie is about two guys who carry on a long affair even while married, it’s still supposed to be really touching and you’ll be able to understand why it happens and not hate them for it, but at the same time it’s not supposed to be one-sided and will show how it hurts their wives as well. In one of this year’s issues of Entertainment Weekly movie reviewer Owen Gleiberman said that it could turn out to be the most revolutionary movie of the year. He says "Brokeback Mountain is a film in which love feels almost as if it were being invented, yet at a moment when issues of equality in gay and straight relationships have become fuel for a fiery culture war, it is also the rare crowd-pleaser with the potential to change hearts and minds." With the big debate on gay marriage and whether or not gay relationships are equal to straight relationships a movie like this coming along and actually winning awards and being a hit could be a big step forward for gay people. I’m really rooting for it. It seems like the most important film of the year and it should also be the most controversial. Besides being a major step forward for our society the success of this film could and should also open up a door for more gay films to be made. The ones that are released are usually low-budget efforts from small studios that get really limited releases in the big cities, and then when they do come to DVD most of the video stores don’t receive them, other than ones in big cities. Bigger studios don’t want to make them and dish out money for them because it’s too risky for them, but this could help change that and maybe we’ll actually start seeing quality gay films released.

I’ve heard about the snickers that people make when the trailer for “Brokeback Mountain” shows in theaters and the anti-gay slurs that are shouted, and it’s really upsetting, but that’s why it’s important for an actual serious gay film such as this to come out and get the exposure it will get. If this didn’t have amazing reviews behind it and awards buzz there is absolutely no way in hell a movie like this would ever see a wide release or that I would ever get a chance to see it in a theater within an hour or two of me. However, because of the obvious award nominations it will receive and hopefully wins, I am sure this will eventually come to my theater. It will take a while and likely won’t be until just before the Oscars air or after they air, but I’m sure it will be coming, and I’m sure I will be going the first weekend it plays at the theater an hour from me. I cannot wait either. The only thing I dread is having to hear all of the negative remarks made by the Christian right and all of the other anti-gay people, and they are sure to come. My dad listens to those obnoxious religious channels whenever he’s home and there is no way they won’t be complaining about this “abomination” of a film non-stop. This will be a huge reason for them to bring out their anti-gay guns. Hell, in early 2005 they were warning people not to see “Million Dollar Baby” and ruining the ending for them to get them to stay away, and that movie wasn’t even a big deal content-wise, especially compared to this. A gay romance receiving such attention and award consideration is going to fill them with rage for sure. I’m really not looking forward to that and no doubt I’ll have to hear some of the things they say because my dad will have the TV on so if I just go out into the living room or to the kitchen I will hear it, and this will make me really upset, but I won’t be able to avoid this and know it’s coming for sure.

It has been a pretty lackluster year for movies and I’ve only seen a couple of really great ones. Of the ones I know of but haven’t seen yet I don’t expect any to be really amazing, except for this one, so I think I can safely say that this will likely end up being my #1 film of the year. The film, with its story, performances, gorgeous cinematography, etc... seems simply beautiful and breathtaking.

I hope a lot of people that have the chance will go and support the film. It seems to be a big crowd-pleaser for those open-minded enough to see it. I'm nervous about the possibility that it might not win Best Picture at the Oscars. It has a really good chance and will be nominated for sure, but there is also the chance that it won't win. I can't begin to explain how upset I'd be if it didn't. A movie like "Brokeback Mountain" doesn't come around often, in fact, this is the first time and very possibly the last, so it not winning would be a missed opportunity and there would be no hope of anything like this ever happening again. It winning is really important to me because it could make a difference. It's a one in a million film. There is nothing like it out there and I don't think there ever will be another gay romance that is completely and utterly adored by critics and that is also a crowd-pleaser that can open up minds, not to mention one that is one of the select Oscar front-runners. Something like this is needed right now and nowhere near as many people will see it if it doesn't win Best Picture. If it sweeps this will be the beginning of something big and a huge step towards America changing. Do I think one film can change the world? No, but this would be a huge step forward and would definitely make a difference. It winning is really important; there is a lot resting on it. I hope the Academy will make the right choice and award "Brokeback Mountain" Best Picture.

First weekend in!

16 N Brokeback Mountain Focus $545,000 - 5 - $109,000 - 1

Well someone seems to be liking it. I will try to see it on monday, after finals, if its not too late, as I couldn't squeeze it in this weekend.

Its growing in buzz and early season award nominations as well. So while I initially expected this movie to hover, Capote style, around 250 theatres tops, it could go up as high as 800, which would mean alot more of you would have a way to see it!

Check the websites for your local "Art House" type theaters. Atlanta has a "Landmark" theater known as the "Midtown Art Cinema". They announce films a few weeks in advance as to when they will be showing. Anyway Brokeback Mountain is coming here this weekend, Geisha and TransAmerica the following weekend etc.

Just an idea.

Yeah, that's what the Enzian is. Fantastic theater. But still, that's not til Jan 6th (and their schedule changes very often). Just wondering if there was some type release schedule or something that may show an earlier playdate.

Fuck, Tampa Theatre and Hydepark here- our art house places, don't have this one planned until late January. If that stays true, I'll be going to Orlando. Besides, I've been meaning to take a trip to Cocoa Beach to see my grandfather's new house. Wanna do a movie night?

Leows Universal is at Citywalk. (Universal Studios)

Ooo Joy. The 13th is a good enough release date.

No suprise it's opening in Miami at South Beach

If I don't see it in Tampa, I'll probably man to see it either at Uni. or Melbourne and make a trip out of it.

Well, I saw it, and the review is up. I think it was a great movie, but I won't go so far as to say its not removed from its content. I hear some people saying its not about homosexuality at all, and that its just a love story. I think that does Lee a big disservice. he had alot to say about societal repression of homosezuality (in specific) and how it affects everyone, not just the couple involved.
