Don't fret over the Southland Tales reviews. Donnie Darko had a harsh reaction from a lot of critics, too.

Babel is getting rave reviews. For example: THR.

I guess I shouldn't have counted that one out... (and I loved 21 Grams and the part I saw from Amores Perros, but I somehow had my doubts about the critical reception for this one)

Variety raves Babel as well:
Quote: Unlike the strenuous dramatics on view in "21 Grams," stars involved at the top of the cast here deliver unshowy, naturalistic perfs. Pitt brings weight and strength that a lesser name might not have provided as Robert, who must endure the uncertainty of his wife's fate on one front and that of his children on another.
Blanchett spends most of the picture either in agony or passed out on the floor of a hut, but even this she does with customary elegance. Gael Garcia Bernal submerges his natural charm to play Amelia's unreliable nephew, whose only responsibility is to drive the group safely over the border and back.
Barraza makes abundantly manifest the rising panic and torment Amelia endures for her misjudgment, and both sets of kids--Said Tarchani and Boubker Ait El Caid as the Moroccan boys and Elle Fanning and Nathan Gamble as the Yanks--are outstandingly expressive without histrionics or cutes.
Kikuchi, however, registers with the most challenging and distinctive perf as a teen who must communicate via sign language and feels a social and emotional outcast for all her physical allure.
Production contributions are excellent, with Rodrigo Prieto's rugged lensing at one with the mostly barren landscapes, Stephen Mirrione and Douglas Crise's editing adroitly intertwining the narrative threads and Gustavo Santaolalla's grave, inventively arranged original score supplementing numerous tunes on the soundtrack.

Nice to see that Pitt pulled off a respectful performance. He's spent a long time in the hunk action star category, it looks like a welcome return to his deeper actor side.

Babel sounds amazing. Perhaps my favorite actor and favorite actress in the same picture.

It seems Marie Antoinette got fucking BOOED at the screening. Oh well. Bad year to be an American film at Cannes. Nothing like last year when Jarmusch, Cronenberg and Tommy Lee Jones were the talk of the festival.

The reaction for Marie Antoinette seems to be quite divided. Another Moulin Rouge?

I believe (and hope) so. It really seems to be a love it/hate it kind of film, which is great
Either way, I don't see how it can lose Costumes and Art Direction at this point.. (Moulin Rouge won Costumes and Art Direction too btw - even Geisha won these two along with Cinematography) Other strong bets seem to be Cinematography and Make-up.. other than that (Picture, Director, Actress, etc.), it'll need some sort of consensus...

The only thing I've really read about Cannes so far is that Volver is getting extremely well-received.

Yep. It 's considered right now to be the main candidate to the Golden Palm along with Inarritu's Babel...

I second andriod. Hopefully. I need a little poplove in my life. This looks fun. Like I mentioned in another thread, finally seeing the trailer on he big screen was nice. I'll probably fall for it.

JoBlo gives Marie-Antoinette a 6/10. That's better than I was expecting, since it doesn't really seem like his kind of film.

Well, honestly, from the very first second I saw the teaser, I've been saying that Marie Antoinette looks terrible.
And I love Moulin Rouge...

Not Cruz herself, though. The whole female cast for Volver won "best actress." And they did the same for actor with another movie.
Did The Wind That Shakes actually have any buzz?

I knew it was not only Cruz, but she was the only one I knew of them, so I just typed her name, heh.

Ken Loach is actually a respected and old director, but a Palme D'Or win....hmmm
