So I say, go to the movie without preconceptions.
This is not a strike against Dolce!
Weirdly is as weirdly does...
After being discouraged by early negative comments about this movie, I finally went out to see it tonight. It turns out that it's very, very good.
I think one key to enjoying this film is having some experience with a long term relationship. Don't get me wrong -- it's surely not mandatory, but it goes a long way to elucidating the core element of this story. This is not your
summer of love, but rather your
slow and gradual lifetime of begrudgingly increasing love...

The Painted Veil is an unwavering meditation on the experience of long term complementary relationships between two humans -- in this particular case, a man and a woman...
Beautifully paced storytelling is the centerpiece of this feast of moviemaking. That and some splendid acting on the part of the two leads. Say what you will, but I found confidence in the fact that Edward Norton and Naomi watts were listed as producers of this film. I'm reassured to see that it's not only me that has a stake in this movie succeeding.
The setting in 1920's China is exquisitely reproduced and the cinematography ably supports it. The supporting cast is uniformly exemplary (esp.: Diana Rigg (!) ). This is a fine, fine production and a moving movie to boot.
Lovely.
7 out of 5.
