Yow! You guys are on some crazy threadcrapping fiesta tonight, eh?!?

(PS: Moulin Rouge is indeed the best picture of the decade...)

See... there may be peace in our time.

Dolce is one of the weird people on this site, I can say this because people like me and bradley and loyal and etc. are weird. I am repeatedly told so in privite :(. And the weird people's reviews should never be trusted by others on this site (even other weird people).

So I say, go to the movie without preconceptions.

This is not a strike against Dolce!

Weirdly is as weirdly does...

After being discouraged by early negative comments about this movie, I finally went out to see it tonight. It turns out that it's very, very good.

I think one key to enjoying this film is having some experience with a long term relationship. Don't get me wrong -- it's surely not mandatory, but it goes a long way to elucidating the core element of this story. This is not your summer of love, but rather your slow and gradual lifetime of begrudgingly increasing love...

Here's a copy of my review from over in the Everyone's A Critic forum:

The Painted Veil is an unwavering meditation on the experience of long term complementary relationships between two humans -- in this particular case, a man and a woman...

Beautifully paced storytelling is the centerpiece of this feast of moviemaking. That and some splendid acting on the part of the two leads. Say what you will, but I found confidence in the fact that Edward Norton and Naomi watts were listed as producers of this film. I'm reassured to see that it's not only me that has a stake in this movie succeeding.

The setting in 1920's China is exquisitely reproduced and the cinematography ably supports it. The supporting cast is uniformly exemplary (esp.: Diana Rigg (!) ). This is a fine, fine production and a moving movie to boot.

Lovely.

7 out of 5.

But, as andaroo accurately notes above: Trust No One!
