Its going to suck. It would be like making a prequel to Romeo and Juliet: The early years. The story of their family fueds was already well established, and no one wants to know more details. They already know how it ends up, and they already had a fair sense of where it went to halfway through. This is asking to take a good memory and beat it to a bloody pulp (read: The Matrix). If Fat and Yeow are smart they'll turn down the roles or lose their careers. Tsk, tsk, Ang Lee should know better than this.

no it won't suck. :D

I'm a huge fan of CTHD and I have hope for the prequel...

(PS: It blows my mind that some people have such a hate on for such an awesome movie!)

:yikes:

Hey, I thought CTHD was excellent, that doesn't mean I think a prequel will be any good. There are too many problems Lee would have to overcome, the biggest of them being that we already know what happened. Its the same problem the Star Wars prequels have. We already know what happens to the characters, so there is going to be zero suspense factor. The lack of suspense means that this film is going to have to be a stricter drama with an emphasis on script. Hoensetly, script/dialogue was never the strength of these movies, and I really challenge anyone to say that of all the positive aspects of CTHD, what drew them to the film the most was the dialogue. That's not what attracted me to the movie, I highly doubt its going to play a huge part in the prequel. What that means we get is a more predictable line, that also only involves two characters rather than four, has no culminating point as an ending since they are still alive and fighting in CTHD, and the history of the sword has already been revealed. The prequel will have nothing to do with CTHD, and more likely will jus be a series of fights, loosely held together by some Montagues/Capulets type family bickering, and the only bridging characteristic will be the actualy presence of Fat and Yeow. I just don't see it working.

One fact to remember is that it is based on a five part Chinese novel - Crane Precious Sword Crouching Iron Pentalogy (as mentioned in the initial post of this thread). CTHD is based on the 4th book and the prequel is said to be based on the 2nd.

Here is a summary of all 5 books, though I admit that I didn't read them myself for fear of spoilers!

So it's not as if the prequel was retro-fitted onto a successful series - the author not only had a complete vision, but a completed 5 part novel. So it's not like Lucas cobbling together the back story from his notes, or a screenwriter imagining what Shakespeare might have had in mind before Romeo and Juliet. I think a more apt comparison might be whether it is necessary to film The Hobbit - for all intents and purposes the direct prequel to LOTR - sure we all know what ended up happening to Bilbo's ring - but the story of 'there and back again' still stands. As a matter of fact, any good story/screenplay is like Bilbo's journey, if it is not well written and structured with interesting characters, the outcome of the plot will matter little to the viewer - movies are about the journey as much as about the destination.

Personally, if Ang Lee chooses to film all 5 parts, I will go see every one and eagerly look forward to each one of them being released - he is a great director who seems at the peak of his talent when interpreting Asian stories for a world audience.

So once again I say - I have hope - bring on the prequel!

Ain't It Cool News reports that the Weinstein brothers have just bought the rights to the whole Pentalogy!

They plan on doing stage (!) versions of each of the four remaining stories, and then making them into movies - they're hoping to bring Ang Lee on board...

This sounds like great news to me!
