Post Horror Fans, Fairy Tales have never been so Grimm!
Anyone heard much or seen a Tale of Two Sisters yet?

Its a horror film, but I'm considering seeing it just because I walk everyday by this poster:

Image

Its tagline reads as the title goes, Fairy Tales have never been so Grimm.

RT has excellent ratings for it (especially compared to most horror genre flicks) 86% fresh and 79% fresh Cream of the Crop.

Here's the synopsis from the site:
Something strange is happening when Su-mi and her younger sister Su-yeon come home to their father's large, but dark and somewhat foreboding house after a stay in the hospital. Their dad is taciturn and burdened and their step-mother, Eun-joo greets them with forced enthusiasm and more than a little sense of irritation. But that's nothing compared to what happens when bedtime rolls around. Su-mi unpacks her bags in her old room only to find her desk and closet full of someone else’s stuff. Su-yeong hears step foots outside her bedroom door and then sees a creepy, ghost-white hand opening the door – but there's no one there. Meanwhile, Eun-joo goes from pre-hysterical to cruel. Then things get really weird: A ghostly young woman is hiding under a kitchen cabinet; a terrifying ghoul visits So-mu's bedroom. Then dad tells a disbelieving Su-mi that Su-yeon has been dead for months. If that's true, what's in that big bag Eun-joo is beating with a poker, that thing that's leaving a blood trail? -- © Tartan Films

What do you guys think? Should this be up next after the group Suspiria viewing?

Ohhhh, Galia.

Tale Of Two Sisters is really, really good. You should totally check it out. It's pretty much the definition of a cerebral horror film, so I really think you'd enjoy it. It has some stunningly lyrical images, too.

 You've already seen it? I should have figured. Its not even out limited yet, how'd you see it? So its not jump out randomly type horror right? Cerebral I can do, its just the jumpy slasher flicks that kind of freak me out. Is it more just like a bloody drama?

Region free DVD players rock.

Yeah, it's a lot like a drama. The structure is very similiar to most Asian horror - slow build up, big time pay off.

It's actually playing at the Cinema 21 right now, but only at 8:55 and a 4:30 PM show today, which I doubt I'll be able to go to.

Word.

Many people have told me about this movie already. They all said it was one of the scaries Asian horror films ever made and these people are usually not easily scared :-k

I need to check it out. Hopefully, it's scarier than Dark Water (which was well-made, but simply not all that scary).

Yeah, I think it's pretty essential if you're a horror fan now-a-days to have a region free player, especially if you live in the states. Most of the best horror is happening in other countries, and it's impossible to see it unless you want to wait for the american remake. I just watched High Tension again last night.

I need to order High Tension from France now. The version released in Germany is cut by over a minute, I think. Argh, I hate film censorship.

The UK Disc is actually the best, Lecter. It's uncut, has the most features, and has English subs. The French disc doesn't have subs.

I thought this thread was going to be about Terry Gilliam.

Ah, good to know. Thanks for the advice, makeshift!

Figured i'd bump this thread up since I just had a group of friends watch this for the first time last night. Needless to say, the night ended with a lot of "What the hell was that", "I'm scared out of my mind right now", and "I fucking hate you, Ashton". I've now seen this film several times, and I have to say that it is probably one of my favorite horror films of all time now. I've never seen a horror film as staggeringly artistic, disturbing, and scary as this. Has anyone else had the chane to see this yet? I'd love to discuss theories as to what actually happened in that house when the sisters came home.

I'd also like to add, and this is probably a reason I love this film so much, I think Ji-woon Kim is either David Lynch himself or Lynch's Korean born twin bother. If it's not the way he manipulates a scene to where it's rather clam and innocent one moment and the next it's making you check your shorts without using "jump" tactics (the girl under the kitchen sink is a perfect example of this) it's the bending of time and reality and the ever changing personalities of the characters invovled. The disturbing themes present throughout the film and the artistic sensibilities on display also smack of Lynch. There are honestly several scenes in this film that look like they could have been clipped from a Lynch film (the dinner party scene stands out the most). I hope this doesn't turn off some people, though (i'm looking at you, Galia). This film really needs to be seen to be believed.

Nope, unfortunately not out here on DVD yet and my computer has been insanely slow downloading recently so I skpiied that altogether. It will be released here in some months, though. I just hope it's not as overhyped as the well-made, but unscary Dark Water. Everyone seems to find it quite disturbing, though.

I'll rent Dead Birds soon, however.

I rented this from Netflix, and I'm watching it tonight. It looks really great. I hope I'm not disappointed.
