We've all talked about how the AMPAS will be looking for more accessible Best Picture nominees this year. We've mentioned Sith and War of the Worlds.

Now it's looking like Batman Begins may have redefined the comic book movie genre. It's getting excellent reviews but can it do what the greatest comic book film ever IMO Spider-Man 2 couldn't do?

That is, get a Best Picture nomination?

I doubt it. Spider-Man 2 is the best comic book movie ever (in my opinion), and that was loved a lot. It didn't get that nomination, though it might have been because there were 5 "better" (if you want to call it that) movies to nominate.

This year, I have no idea what's going for the Best Picture nominee.

It's different from Spider-Man 2. Batman Begins is darker and supposed to the most adult-oriented adaptation ever, as well as helmed by an acclaimed director. Hulk was mentioned as a possible contender for those same reasons before it was released and before the reviews killed it. With Batman Begins getting much better reviews, it's certainly possible.

I dont know much about the Oscars and how it works...but i REALLY HIGHLY doubt that would be happening!
there a lot of contenders out there getting reeady to be released and this is not one of them!

Having not seen the film, I'm in the NO camp, for now at least. I'm merely throwing out the possibly, especially seeing that Cinderella Man is dying at the box office and could very well be out of contention.

There's going to be a big film in terms of scope and box office nominated for Best Picture, that I'm sure of. Which film will take the nod, there's only half of dozen or so films in the running.

Being one of the best reviewed films of the year could only help Batman Begins case.

And let's not forget that since 1990, Warner is second only to Miramax for most Best Picture nominations by a studio.

No, It is not possible. The super-hero movie that gets an oscar-nomination (if ever) won´t be a sequel (and this is, even if it re-starts the franchise)... and I can´t imagine any getting a nomination right now. Maybe a graphic novel will ( a la "Road to perdition", even if that wasn´t nominated)

Either that, or we have a very dull year ahead.

Throwing away my bias that I've seemed to develop or have attributed to me, (I can't tell at this point)...

It does have some hallmarks of best picture material, but there's a lot to overcome. One would think support would mostly come from tech branches for films which push the norm, but there is a lot of competition this year in BIG categories from films that have room to impress after the release of Batman Begins (namely Kong and Worlds). Unlike Hulk, Batman Begins' director wasn't nominated for a Director Oscar, it's lead stars weren't (some supporting characters, yes). Frankly, I don't like the script, which is primarily why I don't like idea of Batman Begins, but then again Seabiscuit didn't have a great one either and got big noms. And even though it is NOT a sequel, will it still be thought of AS a sequel?

AT THIS POINT the reviews are not better than for Spider-Man (the first one) which were pretty much orgasmic and similar in nature to those of Batman, but not all positive and negative reviewers' reactions will be known until next Friday.

I think it's biggest weakness is its plot. The movie finds it's apparent strength in the characters who are involved in this semi-wacky, comicy plot. It would definately be considered an outsider. On paper, King Kong and War of the Worlds, with their bigger names, more Oscarish stars (Cruise, Watts, Brody) and Oscar winning directors, effects teams, etc. etc. etc. still look like bigger contendors.

We will have to reapproach this in two weeks time.

Indeed. I never thought I'd be talking Oscar during the summer but the big players are out in full.

Well... it's always like this really. Last year we were talking about Collateral and we already had an Eternal Sunshine. But there were a lot more indie films.

I'm in the no camp at the moment. If there is going to be a "blockbuster" nominated in the category, I'd handicap King Kong #1, at the moment.

I guess we can draw some comparisons but 2005 seems more exciting to me. Mann and co were robbed BTW. Robbed!

Revenge of the Sith
Batman Begins
Fantastic Four
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
and Narnia

There are some big changes in store for the academy this year.

But none of them can be about comic book heros. Only explosions that make it into the top five biggies are ones involving Vietnam, WWI, WWII, The Civil War, and maybe the American Revolution. No other firepower allowed.

I knew I should have added the "realistic" part. Fictional firepower (LOTR didn't even have guns and bombs per se) are the exception.

Anyways, I'd love to see Batman get a nod. It and Walk on Water are the only two movies this year I've given a grade in the A range to.

I just don't see it happening.

I've stated I didn't think it was happening either. But that was before I saw the film. I'm slowly building my case for the popular slot amoung the 5 films. Of course, there are several other films to be released yet. Many things can change.

If there is a fifth "popular" slot as you put it, I'd give it to Kong or Narnia if either of them has a decent box office run and an above 85% rt fresh rating.
