Really? I'd venture Wallace and Gromit and Corpse Bride actually, with the BIG surprise being Corpse Bride takes it. Mark this in your book now boys. Burton finally gets an Oscar nod and win.

But Spirited Away helps. Without it, Howl's Moving Castle has no chance, but now the door is opened, and Hayao Miyazaki is better known as the master of animated films. As a result, Howl's Moving Castle doesn't have to be a masterpiece on par with Spirited Away to get nominated. A 80% RT and 8.0 IMDb score, if it can maintain them, will probably be enough.

I agree Madagascar is a lock, as it has better mixed reviews than Shark Tale and better box office.

Wallace and Gromit and Madagascar are both Dreamworks. Dreamworks can get multiple nominations, but I wouldn't vote FOR that happening.

Disney will pimp the hell out of Chicken Little.

Two "claymation" films for Academy Awards? Not likely.

That's what I think anyway.

Robots would get a nomination before Wallace. And if The Corpse Bride doesn't do well, it could easily take its place, or Chicken Little.


Madagascar will be the most successful animated film this year, so it's safe.

Spirited Away's year proves that's not necessarily to be true, as shown from its fellow nominees. Disney got a few other contenders as well that year. CGI animation has become more dominant since 2002, and we had 5 nominees back then, but I still think it can be done.

I think it helps and hurts.

It helps that Miyazaki is well known, it hurts that he has recently won, and he recently won for a picture that was considered top notch. I'm not sure that the kind of sympathy for anime and his work is going to be put into play as much as it was that year. Also the acclaim for Moving Castle isn't as universal as what drove Spirited Away to a nomination and a win.


If Chicken Little completely nosedives critically and commercially then maybe.


I think what's going to be more important this round is actually the box office. Moving Castle needs to do really well (by indie/foreign standards) to stay in the game.

I'm going to go see it on Saturday I think.

Dreamworks got 2 last year as well... both CG of course, but still, getting two pictures in a class of 3 is impressive in Academy terms and something only companies like Miramax seem to be able to pull off.

I still wouldn't bet on it going that way, but it's completely within the realm of possibility.

Especially since there has been so many shitty nomiees in recent years... Shark Tale, Jimmy Neutron, Spirit, etc.

I don't know guys, I have a realllllly bad feeling about Chicken Little. Maybe the trailer is just hiding it's genius (like The Emperor's New Groove to some extent), but I reallly doubt it. It's one of the few trailers where I felt insulted while watching it. Disney will probably get something in there, but I realllly don't think this will be it. It just looks so wretched. I'd also venture that Robots doesn't stand a chance. Madagascar is a lock, and I think one of the claymation films will get a nod, but not both. After that, I think that Moving Castle will get a nomination, just not a win.

Yes. I've seen almost everything that's been nominated in the past 10 years at least, for almost every award except most of the foreigns and docus. A little less if we go back 20.

Jimmy Neutron was fun for kids I guess. But I did say it was a "shitty" nominee, and I will stand by that.

I didn't think Waking Life was perfect, but it's one of the few films of the past few years to actually advance its respective genre.

Nominating Jimmy Neutron (which I actually kinda liked) over it is still an absolute joke.

i dont know much about anime, but does Steamboy have a chance? or were the reviews not great although that doesnt matter, look what happend to Shark tale

Considering how lame I thought Madagascar was (even worse than Shark Tale), I hope it doesn't get nominated.
