 Re: AFI Top 10
Here comes Star Wars.
The biggest omission is Revenant. Think Compton will score a PGA nom too.
This could be the BP list, with Revenant replacing Compton.

 Re: AFI Top 10
AFI postponed the announcement just so they could see Star Wars. It was obvious the film would make it. This is essential American cinema.

This could be the BP list, with Revenant replacing Compton. The shaky candidates seem to be Room, Brooklyn and Bridge of Spies. I think two out of three won't make it. Not sure which two.

 Re: AFI Top 10
lol, the fact that they intentionally waited for star wars is so biased. Like, just wait two more weeks, then.

Brooklyn didn't make it here, so I definitely think it's behind Room if it's between the two. Room being eligible and showing up in AFI list is a surprise in itself. The field is getting rather crowded with Mad Max having done so well so far and Star Wars joining late, so I would put Inside Out on the shaky ground as well.

Now, yes, it is a surprise that Room was eligible in the first place, but I don't think that shows its strength over Brooklyn which was rightfully not eligible.

Isn't the absence of The Hateful Eight rather surprising?

A little, yes, but it is looking like the most overlooked of the Oscar nominee hopefuls

Into the Woods, Unbroken and Interstellar all made it on last year. That's probably where Star Wars will end up come Oscar season.

Except that Star Wars is essential American film mythology, had better reviews than those films and will gross more in ten days than those three films combined.

 Re: AFI Top 10
Do you think reviews that call it "exciting and well acted, but a bit too familiar" are Oscar worthy?

 Re: AFI Top 10
If every review said that... maybe. But every review doesn't say that.
Spoiler alert: You don't need a 100% on RT to be nominated at the Oscars.

 Re: AFI Top 10
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 had 96% at RT and 87% at Metacritic. With a higher (8.3) average rating. So if you think Star Wars is going to get nominated, it's purely because of the box office? Of course Star Wars is "essential American cinema" or whatever, and it's the "first franchise" but Empire Strikes Back couldn't even get a nomination, and the is widely considered the high watermark of the franchise.

 Re: AFI Top 10
They do mean something. What the hell are you talking about. Just because the 8th HP film got great reviews and no nomination doesn't mean the 7th SW film that got great reviews isn't going to get nominated.

 Re: AFI Top 10
Exactly. There is no reason to think TFA will get a nomination if Empire didn't. Plus, with The Martian, Mad Max and Inside Out all other huge blockbusters in the race, the Academy doesn't need a ratings booster this year.

 Re: AFI Top 10
Probably because George Lucas had a bad report with the Academy during the production of Empire. Due to creative differences involving the opening credits, he left the Directors Guild and Hollywood has not looked upon him favorably since.

 Re: AFI Top 10
The first Star Wars was nominated more for the technical ground it broke. Empire wasn't as groundbreaking on a technical level. Nor is TFA.

 Re: AFI Top 10
I love Harry Potter. Number one franchise.
But it's not American. At all.
They would have never nominated it. Ever.
Also, DH1 was the best HP movie. But just like how MJ2 is the best HG movie, they are not for American tastes- or rather mass audience tastes.
