The Imitation Game to be this year's American Hustle?
I think The Imitation Game will be one of these films to get a whole lot of nominations, but will ultimately win nothing. Should be good for at least 6-7 noms, but maybe even 8.
Its best shots are Adapted Screenplay and Score, but I see those going to Gone Girl and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Re: The Imitation Game to be this year's American Hustle?
I was actually wondering this today after reading an EW article on Big Eyes. It has two multiple nominees that could score nods this year, paired with a possible Best Pic nomination. I think the steam has all but left it to actually pull it off, but it got me to thinking of what movie the Academy would go "all in" on with lots of major (and a few unexpected nominations), like American Hustle, which really wasn't expected to get nods for Bale or Adams.
So it's possible TIG could be this year's.

This packs quite a historical punch and has great word of mouth...could sneak up the middle in a couple of categories with a win.

Re: The Imitation Game to be this year's American Hustle?
I'm definitely not counting it out as a possible winner until the guilds have had their say. It's a WWII story, it has the Weinsteins behind it, the box office take will be there (which isn't a given for this film in the way that it was for American Hustle), and it's apparently not "too gay," which makes a Brokeback-esque controversy far less likely. It's also perhaps worth considering that The King's Speech was also quiet on the Best Picture front until the guilds fell for it left, right, and center.
That being said, at this moment, I *could* see it getting shut out, but I think that it can at least pick up Adapted Screenplay.

I think this could totally win best picture, but I just don't think it will unless it becomes really beloved. I mean, it has all the ingredients Oscar voters love. It is much more their type of film than Boyhood on paper.

Re: The Imitation Game to be this year's American Hustle?
Imitation Game winning Best Picture would be a little bizarre considering that would likely be its only major win. Linklater has Director, Keaton has Actor, Arquette has Supporting Actress, Gone Girl has Adapted Screenplay... but we'll see how GG and SAG go. I certainly don't think the film is worthy of being a frontrunner but then again I thought the same of King's Speech and Argo.

It is not going to win Best Picture. It even has The Theory of Everything to split the British vote with.

Supporting Actress is unlikely, but maybe if the film becomes a big hit? I don't know. Arquette really seems to have it locked up, and I'd rank Knightley number 4 after Stone and Streep.

The Theory of Everything should get in as long as there are 9-10 nominees.

Well, I guess with Gone Girl out now, The Imitation Game is the frontrunner for Adapted Screeplay...unless American Sniper gets it.

It's crazy how completely and utterly The Imitation Game is losing everything this Oscar season. Five Golden Globe noms and eight BAFTA noms resulted in a total of zero wins. I think American Sniper or The Theory of Everything might snatch its screenplay Oscar too...

I have yet to see this but surely it can't be as bland as American Hustle.
That movie. Hah. It's almost like it never existed and yet it made $150m.

I honestly believe it's because of Enigma. Imagine if a few years later another MLK biopic got released. I think the Academy, however good or bad, would just not be interested. It's too much repetition. Either way, I am glad it's not getting wins.

I'm gonna say that no one remembers Enigma, aside from you. It was released over a decade ago, garnered zero relevant awards attemtion and grossed less than $5 million in the US.

Re: The Imitation Game to be this year's American Hustle?
It had a British cast and featured the exact same story as The Imitation Game. As many of the Academy are British, they sure as hell remember it. It might not be a conscious decision, but I bet many of the Academy just feel they've seen this story played out before, and thus it doesn't excite them enough to vote for it. Give it a nomination, though, sure. Support the British! But not too much. Well, that's my theory of everything.

Start a poll asking how many think there is something to your theory. Go ahead.

I am not, I am just telling how it is. You feel free to have your theories, but I feel free to call them wrong, when they sound really ludicrous.
