Re: Best Visual Effects: which film SHOULD win?
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes should win. The blend of character, storytelling, and masterful digital rendering represented by Caesar deserves an Oscar, particularly since the prior film lost to Hugo. Interstellar would be my second choice. I was a bit surprised by the nominations for the two non-Guardians superhero films. Their F/X are fine, of course. Expensive. Competent. But neither impressed me as much as, say, Maleficent or Godzilla. In fact, I found the Sentinels a tad disappointing.

Guardians for Rocket and Groot. Dawn was great obviously, but it's not that big of a step up over Rise, which lost to frickin Hugo.

I don't understand for what reason Captain America: The Winter Soldier is even nominated. Such basic visual effects.

Interstellar would be my second choice. Agree strongly with this part. David wrote: neither impressed me as much as, say, Maleficent or Godzilla. Strong disagreement here. Maleficent: garish, chintzy, offensively Alicey/Ozian Godzilla: fuck this movie #1 & 2 : Dawn, Interstellar #3 : Guardians #4 & 5 : X-Men, Captain America (I chalk this up to: well-reviewed, successful blockbusters with partial brains)

I like Dawn but it's been there done that in Rise. I'm undecided between Guardians animating a tree and a raccoon or Interstellar with its wormhole, black hole and other space/planetary sequences.

Captain America has the be the most wasted nomination in any category except maybe Robert Duvall.
