 It may be time...
...to consider Kingdom of Heaven as the first major contendor (with reviews!).
After reading all of the articles at Oscarwatch, Jeffrey Wells and David Poland, it's clear that there's something going on here which is a bit beyond summer fare.

Ridley Scott consistently makes very good movies. I was lukewarm about this but the reviews sound really good. I wonder how Orlando Bloom is in this?

Wasn't this just moved to November?
If so, then I, too, would consider it a major player; possibly the first real contender.
I think this is finaly the movie in which we will see how Orlando Bloom acts. All his previous movies were popcorn flicks and he was among a star-studded cast. I really don't think there anything "bad" about hsi acting in those films (LOTR, Troy, POTC) but not anything really noteworthy. I don't get where all these people get their ideas that he can't act. We'll finally see. I am also excited to see what Ridley Scott did with it. I was very impressed with Black Hawk Down.

I don't think you need to wait till the movie opens to make a judgement about how Bloom acts. There's a new long trailer out which shows longer scenes than you normally see in trailers. http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/kingd ... vetrailer/
Personally I think he comes off as a well intentioned lightweight out of his depth but others may think he's doing a good job.

Call me biased, but I refuse to consider anything with Bloom as the lead an Oscar contender.
I really like Ridley Scott, though

I think it looks great, but I think Fox isn't doing the best job marketing the movie. The first trailer didn't have enough story, the second one was nothing but. They gotta get a mix of the two in the TV ads. But I do think that while it's highly debatable how it'll do in any major categories, some technical nods are a lock.

Ads don't really matter. If this is truely what we all expected from one of these ancient war epics that we've had... and with Bloom and the cast. And on top of it if it is *that* good. Fox won't need to sell it... on the first week of May... it will sell itself.
One could also argue, that if Kingdom of Heaven makes it to the final 5 or the final 10, Ridley Scott immediately pops on the radar of directors who have been overlooked by the Academy.

I guess he means five years after Gladiator.

I do agree we should consider Kingdom of Heaven is now THE early oscar contender, and the chance for Cinderella Man becomes even more remote in my opinion. If there hadn't been a strong pre-September movie, it would've helped CM since when people try to do an end of year overview and search for early movies to talk about, its name will keep popping up, even if its quality may not be as good, just as Seabiscuit did. But now, there is Kingdom of Heaven, which will sure gross more in box office, and it looks like it will get at least equally good reviews. Ridley Scott has been able to produce very good movies in genres that many other directors couldn't deliver, and if Elizabethtown is also a hit, media can make this the year of Orlando Bloom and help both's chances.

Time has come to realize that it won't be an Oscar contender.
Which is good, it would be less deserving than Ray.

Is it possible to change the title of the thread just so people know it's about KoH (to stop duplicate threads)?
KoH will not be nominated in any major categories. So we can now cross off two films this weekend from the Oscar race (the other being Crash).
Who's next before Cinderella Man?

Mr. and Mrs. Smith is next, loyal. Maybe Herbie Fully Loaded? We'll see, but the Academy knows that it can't pick one of those boring dramas again. And, the Academy realizes it has to recognize remakes/sequels, or Hollywood will continue to be labelled "uninspired." A sequel/remake getting a nomination would mean that the Academy has finally made note of the general moviegoing audience...
Eh, kidding. About the thread title, um, make sure andaroo agrees.
