 Re: Best Picture 2014
I could see Inherent Vice being a crowd-pleaser and a hit, but it doesn't really feel like a BP movie. I was frustrated by American Hustle last year because it had 5 fantastic performances, but ultimately the movie just didn't entertain me. Inherent Vice looks entertaining.
Right now I'm thinking these films for BP nominations:
Interstellar Boyhood The Imitation Game The Theory of Everything Selma Unbroken Into The Woods
I think one or two more will get in, but I'm not sold on Birdman or Gone Girl as BP movies, so I'm leaving them out. Maybe American Sniper, if the whole movie is as good as the trailer. We'll see.

I'd say Birdman and Gone Girl are locks for nominations; there is no front runner winner yet.

Boyhood is not a lock; it was released in summer, it could easily be another Fruitvale Station.

We'll see. I think it is likely, but the Academy has short term memory loss.

 Re: Best Picture 2014
With Interstellar not looking likely to win, I don't really see a real frontrunner at this point. If having to pick a winner now, I'd probably say The Imitation Game, but the opening is quite big for a late film to come in and surge ahead.

 Re: Best Picture 2014
The Imitation Game is a much stronger film Oscar wise than Boyhood I think. However, its not instantly the "best picture" material as much as its a best actor frontrunner. Definitely a dark horse and the fact that its a bit of an audience crowdpleaser will help it. If its well received by audiences (which I expect despite the subject matter), it has a chance.

 Re: Best Picture 2014
I think of the films released already, Birdman has the best chance. but certainly something else will overtake it.

 Re: Best Picture 2014
I am not predicting Unbroken, but that and American Sniper are the ones we have heard nothing about yet. Could be busts, could be acclaimed. Or and off-topic, but it seems like your above statement is wrong, Magnus. One of my website's authors who reviewed Boyhood at the Berlin Film Festival actually did hate it and gave it 1.5 stars out of 5. So apparently it is possible.

 Re: Best Picture 2014
That being said, I feel that if neither Unbroken nor American Sniper make a huge impression, it will go to The Imitation Game. It could pull The King's Speech at the Oscars. The British block will be behind it.

 Re: Best Picture 2014
We'll have to see how reception to Unbroken is, but I can see this coming down to Boyhood vs. The Imitation Game.
Gravity and American Hustle would both have won had either been released this year.
