Could it happen that American Hustle goes home empty-handed?
I am not currently predicting it, but looking at the state of the race I could imagine American Hustle coming second in many categories, but never finishing first.
I think Director, Actor, Actress, Art Direction and Supporting Actor are pretty much out of question.
Picture - of coursde it could win that, it is probably #2 right now in the race, but I still see 12 Years a Slave being the solid frontrunner.
Best Supporting Actress - yeah, it has got a shot here, but I believe the Academy won't give the award the Lawrence two years in a row, so that probably won't happen.
Best Editing - That will only happen if it becomes a definite BP contender, but right now Gravity should be WAY ahead of it in this category.
Best Original Screenplay - That's where it actually has a great shot and might be the frontrunner, but there is alwaqys a chance that Spike Jonze's Her will snatch it away.
Best Costume Design - Its most likely win, but, again,l I could see The Great Gatsby or 12 Years a Slave getting it instead if the Academy really goes for the latter.
Right now I am predicting two wins, but it wouldn't surprise me if it got nothing afterall.
Also, right now, I'm thinking that five out of nine BP nominees will end up without any Oscars - Her, Nebraska, The Wolf of Wall Street, Captain Phillips and Philomena.

I don't think Director is out of the question. I'm predicting Cuaron but I could see the Academy rewarding Russell as a way to reward all these films he's made recently.

I think McQueen and Cuarón are both ahead of Russell.

Me too. But ever since Tom Hooper...who knows, he could win DGA.

Amy Adams is taking the actress Oscar, so a shutout isn't happening.

I'm still predicting Blanchett, but the big surprise of the night could be Adams.

I feel that for supporting actress Lupita will win over Lawrence if 12 Years wins Best Picture. And yeah, I'm starting to think Amy Adams is a potential threat for Best PActress. I think it'll win at least one.

Re: Could it happen that American Hustle goes home empty-han
Conceivably but unlikely. A 12 Years A Slave shutout seems more possible to me
I would say DOR chances are still quite good. I could see Hustle ending the race by getting SAG, PGA, DGA at which point DOR is a big favorite to just get both, especially if American Hustle is not looking at very many wins overall

I think Philomena's nom has shown that the British francion of the Academy is very much behind that film...

That will never ever ever ever ever fucking ever happen. The "Academy is racist"-shitstorm that'd unleash - they ae not gonna let that happen.

Re: Could it happen that American Hustle goes home empty-han
That's probably why it will get Adapted Screenplay but if it gets upset in that category I would say a shut-out becomes very realistic. And frankly it deserves to lose screenplay, at times the dialog feels like a high school play's - easily the weakness of the film

It's just not happening. Philomena also probably barely got a Best Picture nom, I can almost guarantee you it ranked #9 of 9. Amy Adams, on the other hand, is in a Best Picture frontrunner and has the overdue narrative going for her.

Amy Adams, on the other hand, is in a Best Picture frontrunner and has the overdue narrative going for her. We'll never find out because Blanchett will win , but I maintain that the Academy loves Dench and that sooner or later, she will win her second Oscar. It could just as well be for Philomena and without Blanchett, this is what probably would have happened. Adams is overdue, but she didn't get a SAG nom, even though the voters saw American Hustle on time. The ONLY times that anmyone has ever won an Oscar without a preceding SAG nom were Christoph Waltz for Django Unchained and Marcia Gay Harden for Pollock. That#s from 20 years of SAG and in Waltz' case, the SAG didn't get to see the film on time, as I remember. So it is just Marcia Gay Harden as the only precedence - in a year, in which the two Almost Famous actresses likely cancelled each other out. This is why I would firmly place Dench second.
