Should the Oscars add a new category?
Around this time of year, some people question if the Oscars should have a new category or two. I've always read that they should have a comedy category, and I believe I've read about the want for a stunt coordination category. I think this year we really saw what a vocal performance can add to a film (or not, depending on your opinion of Her).
So should they maybe add something new eventually to the list of categories?
I've never been a big fan of Best Comedy. I think it opens too many doors. Really good comedies have found their way in, while really good comedies, like countless really good films, have been snubbed as well. That's kind of the fun of it. But a Voice Acting category would be welcome.

Re: Should the Oscars add a new category?
A category honoring stunt ensembles would be fine by me.
Perhaps one which finds a way to honor music supervisors and the utilization of previously recorded music cues. Contenders this year might include American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, Inside Llewyn Davis, and The Wolf of Wall Street.

I'd approve of a voice acting category

Re: Should the Oscars add a new category?
A comedy category just so they can nominate films that aren't comedies like the Globes? I wish but they wouldn't do it right.
A performance capture type role? Unfortunately there isn't enough award roles like serkis's performance and I don't think Scarlets work in Her was any bit award worthy. You might as well nominate Murphy as the donkey from shrek in that case.
A stunt category of some type would be a logical step. Stunts are featured in almost every film made.

Re: Should the Oscars add a new category?
Best Ensemble works for me, but it won't create much diversity though since it'll be dominated by BP candidates anyway. Maybe a breakthrough performance type of category.

A breakthrough/horizon type award would be one I'd like to see. Sometimes I feel like actresses get left out (or get nominated but don't win) because of how new they are to the industry.

Though the Academy Awards are so preoccupied with honoring the past, I doubt they would jump to honor the future.

Re: Should the Oscars add a new category?
I always supported the idea of Ensemble. But then who takes home the Oscar is the question

Re: Should the Oscars add a new category?
I would say they should divide Best Score into Best Original Score and Best Adapted Score. Or something similar.

Re: Should the Oscars add a new category?
A category recognizing voice acting/motion-capture performances/etc.
Best Breakthrough Performance would also be a fine addition.

I would agree with a stunt category but I don't want to add any others.

The problem with having a separate thing for mo-cap is that I'd rather the Academy just smarten up and nominate them in the actual acting sections. To me, it's acting just like any other acting. And Best Foreign Language films are films like any other films...

They get their own awards show. The Oscars are glitz and glam. Stunts guys, are not. It will never happen.

Breakthrough would be cool but I'm sure it won't happen as the veterans who still haven't won would be bitter that a newcomer would win every year.

Re: Should the Oscars add a new category?
The stunt category should already be there. You could also have a choreography category, there aren't that many musical dance numbers every year but if fight scenes were included there'd easily be enough
It'd also be easy to get rid of 2 categories. Instead of 3 short categories, just make it one super category "Best Short: Live-action, animated or documentary". Or just get rid of them all and let there be a non-televised shorts ceremony

Re: Should the Oscars add a new category?
None of those above.
However, we need a second cinematography category, for visual imaging. It is unfair to have Lubezki's work in Gravity in the same category as Deakins' in Prisoners. Same for Miranda/Deakins last year. However, it is also not fair to just chalk up the cinematography of Life of Pi or Gravity to "visual effects work". The cinematographers actually did have a lot to do on both, but the work is different.

Besides, it's one award. The show wouldn't suddenly be tacky because stunt professionals show up in suits and ties.
