 The Desolation of Smaug and the Oscars  Could it be the first Peter Jackson/J. R. R. Tolkien film to receive zero Oscar nominations? It is not eligible for Best Makeup, a category in which An Unexpected Journey received a nomination last year. The first prequel's other nominations were for its production design and visual effects. I wonder if a sense of, "five films, ten-plus years, more of the same (however beautiful)" could spread and result in this being shut out tomorrow morning. Best Visual Effects is, I presume, its strongest category, yet I could easily see a lineup such as: Gravity
Iron Man 3
Pacific Rim
Star Trek into Darkness

Re: The Desolation of Smaug and the Oscars It ended up with three nominations, just as many as the prior one. This hit both sound categories, whereas An Unexpected Journey was nominated for neither.
Assuming There and Back Again receives three or four nominations, no film in the two trilogies will have gone without at least three nominations.
