 True Lies - Oscar worthy?
I thought some of you might appreciate this. How Fox positioned the fun, bigger-than-life Arnie CIA Summer blockbuster, True Lies, as a serious, almost courtroom-esque drama, with a changed font and a mature tone, for its Oscar campaign. Gone is the grenade and the red True, and in comes the self-important serif typeface. I LOL'd when I saw this. Got to admire their reach, though.

I actually want to see THAT version of True Lies which that poster communicates. Looks like a REALLY tense court drama.

Yea, I love True Lies. In my opinion, it is award-worthy. Cinema is there to entertain, and True Lies does that no end. But the ad just made me smile because there was no way in hell that the academy would have even considered Jamie Lee Curtis for that movie.

Re: True Lies - Oscar worthy?
Here is another Oscar ad for Jamie Lee Curtis. It seems Fox were really pushing her for a Best Supporting Actress gong. And this is probably why, because she was already nominated for a Best Supporting Actress gong at the Golden Globes, so I guess Fox thought that she was in for a chance at the Oscars. What's funny is that when it comes back to commercial success and praise of the film's box office, the grenade, gun, and Arnie come back into the marketing, and Jamie Lee Curtis, even a mention of her name, have disappeared. Got to say though, the film only looks appealing for me in the above image.

Re: True Lies - Oscar worthy?
I can see why Jamie Lee Curtis' performance might enter the Oscar conversation. It is a fairly intense and nuanced comic turn, portraying the bored and uptight suburban housewife who slowly becomes more proactive and sexual. Far more interesting than many female roles in action pictures.
The dance scene in the hotel is very memorable, too.

Fox/Universal, actually did it the correct way - only advertising what you actually feel could happen. They didn't (as far as I'm aware) nominate Arnold, for example, or the film for Best Picture.

Re: True Lies - Oscar worthy?
Tom Arnold has been talking about a sequel for years now. He brings it up at almost every encounter with the press. A sequel would have obviously been amazing. Too late now, though.
