 The most ambitious campaign ever?
LOL. I mean, they seriously thought that Arnold Schwarzenegger had a chance for Best Actor? and Kristanna Loken had a chance for Best Supporting Actress? and Nick Stahl had a chance at Best Supporting Actor? I mean, these performances were some of the worst of the year. I'd have accepted it they just put a load of technical considerations on there, because the film is CG-heavy and it's fairly decent for 11 years ago. But to put a consideration for EVERY category is just stupid, and totally unrealistic. I'd have pushed in the areas where I knew it was remotely possible, rather than giving all the voters a good laugh at the ad. And then there's the Best Picture consideration.

Re: The most ambitious campaign ever?
Or maybe this one if the most ambitious: I mean, I adore the movie. Absolutely love it. But surely all those at Carolco knew that it stood 0% chance of getting a Best Picture nomination. And Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren for Best Actor nods, seriously? I love their performances (Dolph's more), but no sane Academy voter would have even considered them. Waste of money on the ad.

Re: The most ambitious campaign ever?
I believe this is fairly common early in awards season: a film the studio is hoping becomes a contender for, say, its art direction or FX receives a few please-consider-in-every-category ads. Not sure why. Perhaps they are trying to create an air of value around the entire project rather than just saying, "We only believe this can contend for a technical award or two."

Re: The most ambitious campaign ever?
Don't get me wrong (I love the entire trilogy), but Warner Bros. surely knew almost every category listed here was out of reach, particularly for Revolutions, so softly received compared even to Reloaded: In the end, of course, neither sequel received a single Oscar nomination.

Best Actor Keanu Reeves
Has to be one of the funniest lines I've ever read.

I mean, if you're going to go for it, you might as well go all in...
Even though it's understandable why it happened, it's still funny that The Matrix won four Oscars, and yet its sequels didn't get a single nomination. Reloaded and Revolutions both look and sound great, but having them out in the same year effectively cancelled out each installment. Revolutions was definitely the better shot at nominations because it's flashier and came out last (hence the reason why it got the FYC pictured above), but the awful reception left it doomed to get nothing.

Re: The most ambitious campaign ever?
It had great visual effects. If they had given it a load of technical considerations, and no acting/BP/BD ones, it may have looked less funny.

Granted, this one doesn't go for Best Picture, Best Actor, etc., but still:

Those two are understandable, though. They know where their strengths lie.

Re: The most ambitious campaign ever?
Oh, I have nothing against Contact. They could have included Best Picture, Best Director, etc., and it would not phase me, though I do not head-over-heels love the film myself.
I just found it slightly amusing Batman & Robin enjoyed any type of Oscar campaign. I am trying to remember if it was as ridiculed then as it is now. Batman Forever received a nomination for Best Cinematography and both sound categories.

Re: The most ambitious campaign ever?
Solidly fun movie (surely beloved by a certain niche audience), but this was still very "ambitious":

I Am Legend is one shit movie. Best Picture? LOL
The Frighteners is very ambitious. I don't think they left many categories off.

Re: The most ambitious campaign ever?
While I admit that it is very ambitious to expect the academy to consider Oogieloves for anything, they did only write three categories, and they are not so surprising. I don't think this tops the Terminator 3 or Universal Soldier or even Matrix Revolutions campaigns.
